Upcoming Auction at Sotheby’s Features Highly Coveted Bottle of Scotch Whisky Valued at £1.2 Million

Sotheby’s auction house has announced that a 96-year-old bottle of single malt Scotch whisky from Macallan distillery, known as The Macallan Adami 1926, is slated for auction next month in London. The esteemed auction house has assessed the bottle’s estimated value to be as high as £1.2 million ($1.4 million). The advance bidding process for this remarkable item is scheduled to commence on November 1, with the auction itself to take place on November 18.

A similar bottle of The Macallan 1926 was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in 2019 for a record-setting £1.5 million, making it the most expensive bottle of wine or spirit ever auctioned. This high-profile sale was not an isolated event; the record was broken three times due to the auction of different bottle variations in 2018 and 2019.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Global Head of Spirits, remarked, “The Macallan 1926 is the singular whisky that every auction house aspires to offer and that every collector desires to possess. I am greatly enthusiastic about presenting a bottle of this vintage at a Sotheby’s auction for the first time since we established a new record for it four years ago.”

The Macallan 1926 has been aged in sherry casks for over six decades, and only 40 bottles were ever produced, making it Macallan’s most aged vintage. According to Sotheby’s, a portion of these bottles were made available to select Macallan clients. Up to 14 of these were adorned with Macallan’s prestigious Fine and Rare label, including the one that previously broke the auction record. Additionally, twelve bottles, including the one to be auctioned next month, feature labels designed by Italian artist Valerio Adami.

The bottle slated for next month’s auction is unique in that it is the first to have been reconditioned by Macallan distillery prior to auction. This refurbishing process involved the replacement of the cork and the application of new adhesive to the bottle labels’ corners.
