University of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders might have to have his left foot amputated

Deion Sanders, the head football coach at the University of Colorado, may face the possibility of amputating his left foot due to circulation problems that previously led to the amputation of two toes in 2021.

Sanders allowed “Thee Pregame Show” camera crews to film a meeting with his medical team at the University of Colorado, where he is preparing for his inaugural season as head coach. In an 11-minute segment released on YouTube, Sanders discussed his daily pain levels and potential next steps with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ken Hunt, vascular surgeons Dr. Donald Jacobs and Dr. Max Wohlauer, and athletic trainer Lauren Askevold.

During the meeting, Dr. Jacobs emphasized the risks involved, stating that Sanders might not only lose another toe but also face the possibility of losing his entire foot. Sanders, aware of the risks, responded, noting that he already has only eight toes.

Sanders shared that he has no feeling on the bottom of his left foot and expressed his desire to undergo any recommended procedure immediately, as he expects to be occupied once the football season begins.

In 2021, Sanders missed three games at Jackson State due to the amputation of two toes. Following Colorado’s disappointing 1-11 season in 2022, Sanders took charge of the struggling Buffaloes program in December. His appointment has sparked renewed interest in the team, which has had limited success in recent years, with only two winning seasons since 2016, one of them being a 4-2 record during the pandemic-impacted 2020 season.

The Buffs’ spring game in April was sold out, and the team has achieved a sold-out season ticket allotment for the first time in almost 30 years. Colorado’s season opener is scheduled against TCU on September 2, followed by a home game against former Big 12 rival Nebraska a week later at Folsom Field.
