UN Demands Taliban Reverse Women’s Bans in Afghanistan

The United Nations (UN) approved a resolution this Thursday urging Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers to immediately stop their oppressive laws affecting women and girls. These serious laws include blocking girls from attending school, stopping them from having jobs, and not allowing them in most public places such as gyms. The UN also expressed how completely unacceptable it is that the Taliban has prevented women from working for the UN – something which has never happened before in history!

In August 2021, the Taliban took over Afghanistan as U.S. and NATO exited the country after 20 years of war. They said they would be more lenient this time compared to their 1996-2001 rule. Sadly, many people grew angry as the Taliban began enforcing their strict rules of Islamic law (known as Sharia) on women and girls.

The resolution is worried about the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan because the Taliban (a group of people) are taking away their rights and freedoms. It also recognizes that women and girls have an important role to play in Afghan society.

The United Nations is asking the Taliban to give girls and women access to school, getting jobs, being able to go places and taking part in society like everyone else. All countries in the U.N. are being asked to help make this happen right away.
