U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team, Spearheaded by Simone Biles, Dominates World Championships

Simone Biles orchestrated an overwhelmingly strong showing for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team during the preliminary rounds at the world championships, registering an all-around score of 58.865 to secure the leading position across two subdivisions on Sunday.

At 26 years old, Biles—who boasts five world all-around championships and seven Olympic medals—achieved the highest marks in the floor exercise, vault, and balance beam. She also earned the second-highest score on the uneven bars, trailing only her teammate Shilese Jones, during the initial segment of the qualifying round.

Joining Biles were teammates Jones, Skye Blakely, Leanne Wong, and Joscelyn Roberson, who collectively accrued a total score of 171.395. This figure is expected to remain unsurpassed by a significant margin as the qualifying rounds conclude. Italy followed in second place, tallying a score of 162.230 after two of the 10 subdivisions.

Already holding a record-breaking 25 world championship medals—19 of which are gold—Biles has an opportunity to augment her already illustrious career throughout the remainder of the competition week.

The U.S. squad enters the championship as the overwhelming favorite to clinch the team title, scheduled for Wednesday. The individual all-around finals will occur on Friday, with specific event finals slated for Saturday and Sunday.

After a two-year hiatus subsequent to the Tokyo Olympics, Biles made a successful return to competition earlier this summer. She executed her signature Yurchenko double pike vault effortlessly, achieving a score of 15.766. Interestingly, she voluntarily accepted a half-point deduction to allow her coach, Laurent Landi, to remain on the mat as a safety measure.

Shilese Jones, a 2022 world championships triple medalist, will accompany Biles in the all-around finals. She garnered an all-around score of 56.932, buoyed by an exceptional performance on the uneven bars that topped the list of competitors with a score of 14.833.
