A tragic event happened on Saturday night in western Minnesota. A sheriff’s deputy passed away on his 44th birthday while two other law enforcement officers were injured during a shootout. The suspect of a domestic assault was the one responsible for this terrible accident and did not survive either. Fortunately, the two policemen injured are expected to recover soon from their injuries.

The police told a man he was going to be arrested for hurting someone in his home. According to Scott Mueller, who is part of an investigation team known as the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the man got a gun and shot at the officers. The man later died from being shot by the officers and their identities have not been released yet.

The police officers in this case were all wearing body cameras, and filming of the incident is expected to get released soon. This happened recently and it is part of a growing number of police shootings taking place in Minnesota. In fact, there have already been seven police officers shot on duty this year alone! The police organization thinks this trend needs to come to an end quickly. The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association has also identified who the deputy was that died in the Sunday morning shooting.

Brian Peters, the director of the association said that this incident of killing someone is a horrible act of violence and hatred towards officers who work hard for the safety of our communities. It reveals how hazardous it can be for police officers since an ordinary day can unexpectedly become their last one.

Owen was a deputy for nearly 12 years and used to be in the United States military. His car parked outside the Pope County Courthouse in Glenwood on Sunday had a bouquet of flowers next to it.

Sheriff Tim Riley, who was emotional during his speech, said that Owen was a very kind person with a big heart and he had left behind his wife and son. He knew how much Owen cherished his family, colleagues and the community as well.

Owen, a first responder from the Pope County Sheriff’s Office, was recently given an award last month. He earned this honor for helping out in a housefire that happened in Glenwood last November. Owen even took care of a person who had been hurt in the fire after another deputy and responder got them out of the burning house! Cyrus is a small town located about 140 miles (225 kilometers) away from Minneapolis – it only has about 300 people living there.
