Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell expressed her condolences, stating, “This is a dreadful and devastating event that has resulted in the loss of three lives.” The two deceased were discovered on one street shortly after 4 a.m., and the third in a different street. The three individuals injured by the van, found at a separate location, were receiving treatment in a hospital. Their current health status wasn’t immediately known. Witness Lynn Haggitt recounted the chilling details of the incident. On her way to work around 5:30 a.m., she noticed a white van stopping beside her. The driver, noticing a police car slowly approaching without lights, suddenly accelerated, hitting a man and a woman on the street corner. “The driver deliberately ploughed into them, didn’t even swerve,” Haggitt reported to the media. “The man was launched into the air while the woman was knocked onto the sidewalk. It was a horrifying scene that I wish I hadn’t witnessed. It’s left me deeply unsettled.” The driver then took off at high speed through the city center with police in pursuit. The injured man, who seemed to have sustained a head injury, was assisted to stand up, while the woman sat on the sidewalk, seemingly unharmed. Police have yet to disclose any potential motive. The case is under the jurisdiction of local police rather than counterterrorism units. “We’re confident that these three incidents are all interconnected and a suspect has been taken into custody,” stated Meynell. “The investigation is in its initial phase and detectives are working diligently to ascertain the exact sequence of events.” Kane Brady, a University of Nottingham student, described being awoken by shouts of “armed police” and loud noises that resembled gunshots. He witnessed police armed with stun guns arresting a man who was trying to resist, as he was pulled out of the van and restrained. “I saw the man being apprehended, struggling against the arrest,” he reported to GB News. “I saw a large knife being retrieved from the van just before the police cordoned off both roads.” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak referred to the incident as alarming, requesting that the police be given sufficient time to investigate. He expressed his sympathies for those injured and the family and friends of the victims. Several photographs circulating on social media showed police, some armed with rifles, at different locations in the city center, near the cordoned-off areas. The city’s tram network was suspended following the incident. Nottingham, a city with a population of approximately 350,000, is located roughly 110 miles (175 kilometers) north of London.
