During a Sunday Mass in northern Mexico, a church roof unexpectedly collapsed, resulting in a minimum of 10 deaths and approximately 60 injuries. Rescue teams conducted extensive searches throughout Sunday night and into Monday morning, seeking both survivors and any additional victims buried under the rubble.

The Mexican Council of Bishops expressed their condolences, stating their prayers are with the families affected by the tragic loss of life and injuries sustained.

Bishop José Armando Alvarez of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tampico revealed that the roof’s collapse occurred at the Santa Cruz church in the Gulf Coast city of Ciudad Madero, adjacent to the port city of Tampico, while the congregation was engaged in receiving communion.

Subsequently, the diocese released a list detailing those injured, which included an infant aged four months, three children aged five, and two children aged nine. A notable number of younger victims—among them, three children who died—could be attributed to the fact that baptisms were scheduled to take place at the venue.

“We deeply regret the devastating loss of individuals who were attending a baptismal celebration,” Alvarez stated.

However, amidst the sorrow, there were glimmers of hope. “Individuals have been successfully rescued from the debris, thanks to Divine intervention and the diligent efforts of the rescue teams,” announced a statement from Alvarez’s diocese.

Alvarez also requested donations of wood, presumably to stabilize the compromised structure to enable safer rescue efforts.

Photographs released by local press depicted the church as mainly a concrete and brick edifice, with significant portions of the roof lying almost level with the ground. Security footage from a nearby location showed that the unusually designed gabled roof simply fell inwards, without any signs of an outward explosion, leading experts to conclude that structural failure was the likely cause.

A video disseminated by the state civil defense office depicted efforts to lift sections of the fallen roof using cranes. However, due to the risk of further collapse, such mechanical efforts were discontinued in favor of manual rescue methods. Rescuers proceeded under the slab supported by wooden props and hydraulic jacks, while trained dogs were deployed for survivor detection.

The absence of any seismic activity strong enough to cause the collapse, as reported by the National Seismological Service, alongside a lack of evidence suggesting an explosion, makes the incident all the more perplexing.

Ciudad Madero is situated approximately 310 miles south of Brownsville, Texas. While the state of Tamaulipas is known for drug cartel activities, Ciudad Madero, situated in the southern part of the state near the neighboring state of Veracruz, has been relatively less affected by such violence.
