Early Tuesday morning in Voorschoten, Netherlands, a train crashed off the tracks and two of its carriages flew into a field nearby. Unfortunately, one person died as a result and 30 other passengers were hurt, many of them seriously.

People were seen using rickety bridges and ladders to get across the drain next to the train tracks. Most of the windows in the train carriages had been broken–we weren’t sure if it happened during the accident or when people were trying to escape.

Two of the colorful train carriages painted yellow and blue stopped across a small canal and were sitting in an open field. The front part of the train got really damaged. Some of the other parts of the train derailed, too.

This four-carriage passenger train was carrying about fifty people when it crashed. Another freight train was also on its rails near this wreckage not far from Leiden and The Hague cities.

At 3:25 a.m. (0125 GMT) in the town of Voorschoten, near The Hague, there was an accident involving a passenger train, a freight train, and a construction crane but no one knows exactly what happened. Railway company NS stated this in an official statement but did not share any more details about it.

The CEO of NL said that everyone has a lot of questions and we want to know what really happened. We need to investigate it quickly and also focus on taking care of the people who have been affected.

11 people who got hurt from the train crash have been given medical care. Some were taken care of in houses near the accident site, and others had to be taken away by ambulances to different hospitals. Among those hospitals is a special hospital in Utrecht, which was especially opened for this incident.

The local fire brigade tweeted that it looks like a passenger train crashed into some building material.

Today, there was a really bad train accident near Voorschoten that resulted in one death and injured many people. Prime Minister Mark Rutte, King Willem-Alexander, and Queen Maxima all tweeted their condolences to the family of the victim and all other people involved. Additionally, according to Ingrid de Roos from the local fire services, a small fire happened at the back end of the train but it was put out quickly. They all wish for everyone affected by this incident to stay strong and get help as soon as possible.

John Voppen, the boss of Pro Rail which is in charge of running trains, described the accident that happened as an extremely bad day. He also said that people are still trying to find out why it happened.
