People in many parts of America were trying to figure out the extent of damage caused by strong storms and possible tornado on Sunday. At least 32 people lost their lives in these storms. The city of Wynne, Arkansas experienced a lot of destruction, and an audience at a concert event in Illinois had the roof collapse over them. Sadly, more people died as time passed by after these horrific events.

President Joe Biden said that a lot of people were sad and worried because their families, homes, and businesses were hurt in the disaster. He also declared certain areas to be “major disaster areas” which means the government can give money and other help for recovery.

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders in Arkansas had to do something about a bad situation – five people were killed. So, the Governor declared it an emergency and called for help from the National Guard (the military).

Tornadoes happened in eleven states and they caused a lot of destruction. People’s homes and businesses were destroyed, trees were broken up, and entire neighborhoods were ruined.

The National Weather Service discovered on Sunday that a tornado caused destruction to some houses close by Bridgeville, Delaware. A dead body was found in the wreckage of one house after the storm late Saturday night, according to the Delaware State Police.

It may take several days for us to know exactly how many tornadoes happened recently. We already know at least nine people died in one Tennessee county, five passed away in Indiana and another four died in Illinois.

At least four people died due to the stormy weather that happened on Friday night and Saturday in Alabama and Mississippi.

When the residents of Wynne, Arkansas woke up on a Saturday morning, they’ve found out that their town’s high school had its windows broken and roof torn apart. Sadly, this caused more than just property damage; these storms have cost lives too.

Ashley Macmillan and her family were in the bathroom with their dogs, scared because a tornado was passing. They thought they were going to die. luckily, they all made it out alive, but there was a big tree in their house that caused lots of damage. Outside you could hear the buzzing of chainsaws and bulldozers clearing away the debris. Power was restored to some areas so people can begin repairing what was destroyed.

The state of Tennessee has experienced a lot this week, with 15 people losing their lives and nine of those deaths occurring in McNairy County. Governor Bill Lee went to the county Saturday to survey the damage and talk with those affected by the storm. This happened only days after a school shooting took place in Nashville resulting in six people dying – one being a family friend of Governor Lee whom he and his wife attended the funeral for.

Lee said it was terrible what had happened in Tennessee, but he noticed that the community had responded just like Tennesseans usually do.

Rachel Milam lived with her 6-year-old daughter in the basement of a family home near Waynesboro, while her mom and her mom’s boyfriend stayed upstairs.

Friday night, everyone rushed into the basement’s bathroom because they heard the tornado was coming. It sounded like someone had switched on a washing machine. Once it arrived, the shower curtain dropped and they could only see darkness. Then, rain started falling and terror filled the air; as they observed, their home got picked up by the storm and moved about six inches before it disappeared.

Milam said, “I was just thinking that we will leave before the tub falls on us.” Then a piece of wood and a mirror dropped over them. She continued, “We were lucky because we managed to get out safe.”

Milam, who is a nurse, started to help out her neighbors with the rescue effort. They were trying to free people from their destroyed homes. One woman was injured and had cuts on her body. She had to be flown away in a helicopter for treatment. Another man was lucky enough that people with chainsaws cut through his house’s rubble and freed him.

Jeffrey Day saw on the news that his community, Adamsville, was being hit by a storm. He quickly called his daughter and when she answered he could hear her screaming. She asked him “What do I do, daddy?”. Jeffrey said he didn’t know how to answer her and was feeling very sad. After the storm was over, his daughter bravely left her house which had been destroyed and drove to family who lived nearby.

The Governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, visited Belvidere to check on an incident that happened at the Apollo Theatre while around 260 people were watching a heavy metal concert.

Unfortunately, Frederick Livingston Jr. was stuck in the rubble when it all began. He had gone to the theater with his son Alex.

Alex said he couldn’t save his dad because everything happened so quickly. They were both standing together when pieces of the theater started falling down onto them.

The governor said that 48 people needed to get medical help, and 5 were really serious. He was going to a place called Crawford County- it’s 230 miles south of Chicago. Three people died there, and eight more were hurt when a tornado hit New Hebron.

The Sheriff of the area stated that they had taken people out of their basements where their house was collapsed on top of them but fortunately, they had found safety before this happened.

Close to three people lost their lives in Indiana’s Sullivan County which is 95 miles away from Indianapolis. During the night, many individuals were saved and around 12 people suffered injuries.

DeMillo wrote about news from Little Rock, and Finley wrote about Norfolk in Virginia. Many other writers around America also contributed to this report, like Kimberlee from Adamsville in Tennessee, Harm from Belvidere in Illinois, Corey from Detroit, and Ron from Philadelphia.
