Tiger Woods Makes History, Extends Unprecedented Masters Cut Streak to 23

Thanks to his friend Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods was able to make it into the Masters tournament for a record 22nd time. When he was finished with his second round on Saturday, it looked like he wouldn’t make it because he had gotten two bogeys which put him in 52nd place. But since only the top 50 players get to continue onto the next round of the tournament, Justin helped him out to keep playing!

Right after Tiger Woods finished signing his scorecard, Justin Thomas missed a putt on the 17th hole and dropped his score to 3-over par. This meant everyone who had that same score was inside the cut line. To make sure Tiger would be able to play over the weekend, Justin bogeyed the last 18th hole. With this, Tiger matched Fred Couples and Gary Player as having made it through to the Masters longest streak of cuts!

Woods said, “I really love this golf course and playing in this event! I hope I get to play this weekend.” Luckily, his wish was granted; however, the weather started getting worse as he got 6 over par through 7 holes. Meanwhile, Thomas had already left after bogeying the last two holes.

On Friday, there were so many storms that three big pine trees near the 16th green got knocked down. Luckily, no one was hurt and workers cleared them away by the time play started again on Saturday.

Woods was two points over par with seven more holes left to play when he got back on the course. He made a birdie at the 15th hole, but his tee shot at 17 went off-course, causing him to make a bogey. At 18, Woods hit his ball into the trees, so he had to chip his next shot from some pine straw nearby. His approach came up short of the green – then he took one more shot and putted for another bogey.

The weather was getting worse and Thomas had to bear the consequences. It was pouring so heavily on the 18th hole, a difficult uphill par-4, that Thomas had to hit a fairway wood shot from 218 yards. He went too left and almost reached the spectators’ area. His pitch fell short and he made another bogey which is a score of one stroke over par.

Due to this, two other players named Thomas Pieters and Charl Schwartzel were also able to make it through with Woods at 3 over par in round two.

From the 18 players of the Saudi-supported LIV Golf course, 12 were able to make it successfully. Of them, leader Brooks Koepka managed to escape from the bad weather on Friday and was 2 points higher than Jon Rahm (at 12 under).

When play was paused, Koepka had another birdie and he reached 13 under, while Rahm slightly dropped one point and stayed at 9.

Abraham Ancer, one of the players who made it through to play in the tournament said it’ll be tough. “It’s gonna be windy, cold and rainy but we’re all gonna have to go through this together.”

Unfortunately, Rory McIlroy won’t join them since his score of 5 over par on Friday was not enough for him to stay in the competition. So he will have to wait until next year before he gets another chance at winning the career Grand Slam.

Bryson DeChambeau and Mike Weir didn’t make the cut because they got 74 scores back-to-back, while Fred Couples made it in with 1 over score when he finished his second round on Saturday.

In 1992, the champion golfer had some tough shots at the end, but he still managed to become the oldest person ever to make it through Augusta National Golf Club. That’s about 3 and a half months more than Bernhard Langer did in 2020!

For the last four years, Fred Couples’ golf games have been average – even though he did manage to make the cut in one year. But making this cut wasn’t his goal; instead, he wants to still compete and learn from the younger players. He’s looking forward to playing 36 holes and having fun while doing it.

Fred Couples had the second most cuts made at Masters trails, with only Jack Nicklaus having more. He hadn’t known that he was the oldest player to do this and when he heard he had beat out Langer’s record, his response was simply “Well, good.” When asked about the exact number of days he set that record for, he said, “Today is another day. If it was Friday, it would have been 107.”
