Movie: An Unprecedented Box Office Success” by Lucas Garcia April 10, 2023 written by Lucas Garcia April 10, 2023 0 comments Bookmark 71 Lots of people wanted to go and watch ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ this weekend, so it ended up making a lot of money in theaters all over North America. In its first five days, the movie earned 204.6 million dollars from 4343 theaters! And on just the weekend alone, it got 146.4 dollars! In total, the movie based on the popular video game “Mario” has made $377 million worldwide, with $173 million of that coming from international markets. This means it made more money than both other video game adaptations (“Warcraft’s” $210 million) and animated movies (“Frozen 2’s” $358 million), setting new records in both genres. “The Secret Life of Pets 2” has made a ton of money since it opened, which makes it the biggest movie of 2023 so far! It earned more than “Finding Dory” and holds an all-time record for Illumination, the company who made this movie and other popular ones such as “Minions.” Altogether, those 13 films have combined to make over $5 billion! Jim Orr, Universal’s President of Domestic Distribution, said: “Nintendo and Illumination have done a great job by working together which resulted in an amazing performance!” The movie “Mario” is about two Brooklyn plumbers, Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day). They suddenly fall down a pipe and find themselves in an unusual world where Nintendo’s famous characters like Bowser (Jack Black) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). Critical reviews for the PG-rated movie were mixed, with a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences seemed to be more pleased as this received an A CinemaScore. The theater owners were shocked because people of all ages came to see the movie. At the end, they looked at who was there and found out that 59% were men and 45% were between 18 and 34 years old. Some even wore costumes from the movie! Paul Dergarabedian said that the high success of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (which will launch on May 5th) is a sign of how important it is for families to find activities outside their home. He also pointed out that even with the large amount earned worldwide, going on this activity still costs less than taking a trip or attending a sports event! “It was the best time to launch the release,” said Dergarabedian. This week, “Mario” wasn’t the only movie playing in theaters. Ben Affleck made a new movie called “Air” which tells the story of Nike’s Air Jordan and how Nike paid Michael Jordan to play for them. It is Amazon Studios’ first global theatrical release and opened up in 3,507 theaters Wednesday. So far it has earned over 20 million dollars which means it took third place at the box office this weekend alone with 14.5 million dollars! The movie “Air”, starring Matt Damon, Viola Davis and Affleck received really good reviews (95% on Rotten Tomatoes) and it wasn’t only intended for adult audiences; people of all ages got to watch it. Most viewers were male, 55%, while 39% of the viewrs were 45 years or older. According to Dergarabedian, the movie was pretty successful and it seems like it’s going continue to stay in cinemas for a while. The first movie from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s new company Artists Equity (which was started last year with RedBird Capital) is called “Air”. The second most popular film was “John Wick Chapter 4”, which earned $14.6 million in its third weekend, bringing it to a total of $147.1 million. The third place went to “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” which made $14.5 million on its second weekend. Finally, “Scream VI” came in fifth by earning $3.3 million in ticket sales. Kelly Reichardt’s new movie, “Showing Up” with Michelle Williams and Hong Chau, only played in four movie theaters but still managed to make $66,932!
