A lot of overweight Americans are looking for medications like Ozempic and Wegovy to help them lose weight. However, an even stronger drug called Tirzepatide (marketed under the brand name Mounjaro) is about join the market. People with diabetes who are overweight or obese have seen good results with this particular medication—they’ve been able to lose up to 34 pounds, or 16% of their bodyweight, in a span of 17 months on Tirzepatide!

A new study found that people who used a particular drug to lose weight lost up to 22% of their body weight in a short amount of time. That means for someone taking the highest dose, they could drop more than 50 pounds!

For people who have diabetes, it can be really hard to lose weight. But according to Dr. Nadia Ahmad from Lilly’s medical department for obesity treatments, the new results are very good and show a big difference in weight reduction. She said she hasn’t seen something like this happen before.

Company officials said they are almost done with their application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to see if they can start selling a drug called tirzepatide for weight management. We may know by the end of this year whether or not it is approved. The company has not said whether the drug will have a different name when sold in the US.

If it gets approved, tirzepatide could become the best drug yet for helping people to lose weight. Lots of Americans are overweight, which can cause all sorts of health problems that could make you really sick or even lead to death.

Dr. Caroline Apovian from the Center for Weight Management and Wellness at Brigham and Women’s Hospital said that if everyone in this country with obesity lost 20% of their body weight, it would help them get off medications like ones for reflux, diabetes, and high blood pressure. This could also prevent people from needing treatments like stent replacement.

Experts predict that tirzepatide could become one of the biggest-selling drugs ever, with yearly earnings of over $50 billion. It is likely that it will surpass Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Wegovy – drugs that were both approved for weight loss in 2021 and already made around $10 billion in 2022! Reports show that these drug prescriptions are only rising!

People taking tirzepatide have lost more weight than those taking semaglutide. Those using semaglutide dropped around 15% of their body weight over sixteen months. A trial comparing the two drugs to see which works better is happening soon.

Mounjaro was given permission last year to treat diabetes. Many people have taken it since then, prescribed by doctors and telehealth providers, to help them lose weight.

In California, Matthew Barlow is 48 years old and works in the health technology industry. Since November last year he has lost more than 100 pounds thanks to Mounjaro and changing his diet. He shared that psychologically he doesn’t feel like eating as much anymore, but now even a small bite of dessert can make him feel satisfied.

Doctors are no longer just suggesting diet and exercise as the only ways to reduce weight. There’s an exciting new development where drugs like tirzepatide target pathways in your body that lead to obesity, making you feel less hungry, and more easily able to resist cravings for food.

This is a huge game changer according to Dr. Amy Rothberg from the University of Michigan – she leads a program designed to help people with weight loss and diabetes.

Studies have found that if you just do healthy dieting and exercise, nearly a third of people will lose at least 5% of their body weight. However, with the most effective dose of a drug called tirzepatide, 86% of patients managed to lose even more than 5%, and more than half lost about 15%.

Obesity medications help people resist the body’s natural urge to stop weight loss when dieting. Dr Aronne says that this is a real physical occurrence and we have some hormones which respond when our calorie intake reduces.

Ozempic and Wegovy are two types of medicine that helps to regulate insulin levels. They work by imitating a hormone found in your gut, after eating. This hormone called GLP-1 speeds up insulin production and lowers the sugar released from the liver. In addition, it also slows down digestion and reduces hunger feelings so you feel fuller for longer periods of time.

Tirzepatide is a special drug that uses two hormones, GLP-1 and GIP. Those hormones help control the signals sent from your stomach to your brain to stop you feeling cravings for food.

While the drugs may be safe, they can bring some serious side effects. These include things like diarrhea, throwing up, constipation, and stomach pains. Some people have gotten an inflammation of the pancreas while using this medicine, or gallbladder problems. The instructions also say that it could cause thyroid tumors and even cancer.

Semaglutide drugs have been around for a while but we don’t know yet what could happen if you take them for long periods of time. Plus, recently it’s been hard to get these drugs because they’ve been running out and it costs about $1,000-1,300 per month. In addition, some people might put the weight back on when they stop taking them.

Only about 20-30% of people with private insurance can get their weight loss medications for free. Some insurance companies are changing their rules, and now they need you to prove that you changed your lifestyle or lost a certain amount of weight in order to be able to cover the medication. Medicare doesn’t usually pay for these medicines, but drug makers are trying to push Congress to change this policy.

Experts believe that the effects of drugs like Tirzepatide, Ozempic and Wegovy show that losing weight is not just a matter of willpower. In fact, obesity should be considered a chronic disease similar to high blood pressure which affects about half of Americans. This means that being overweight isn’t about lack of character or something you can easily control.

It’s still not clear how new medicines will influence people’s narrow-minded views of those who are obese. Rebecca Puhl, a scholar from the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Health who studies weight discrimination, noted that U.S. culture has strong ideas about body size and look that are really hard to move away from.

She also said that being labeled as someone taking an easy way out or simply ‘not trying hard enough’ could make the bias against obesity even worse if they choose to use medication as treatment.
