Box Office Weekend Report

Over the past weekend, “The Nun 2” narrowly surpassed “A Haunting in Venice” for the top position at the box office in the United States and Canada. According to Sunday’s studio estimates, the horror sequel garnered slightly more attention than the latest Hercule Poirot mystery.

In its sophomore weekend, Warner Bros.’ “The Nun 2,” an offshoot of the studio’s profitable “Conjuring” series, pulled in $14.7 million. If these preliminary figures are confirmed, it will mark the film’s second consecutive week leading the box office, bringing its domestic total to $56.5 million and global earnings to $158.8 million.

Not far behind was “A Haunting in Venice,” directed by Kenneth Branagh, which is his third film adaptation of an Agatha Christie novel, following 2017’s “Murder on the Orient Express” and 2022’s “Death on the Nile.” The film debuted with $14.5 million.

The final box office numbers are scheduled for release on Monday.

After the international success of “Murder on the Orient Express,” which amassed $352.8 million worldwide against a $55 million production budget, and the less-impressive global performance of “Death on the Nile,” with $137.3 million against a $90 million budget, the tepid start for “A Haunting in Venice” could signify waning interest in Branagh’s detective series. The 20th Century Studios film, distributed by Walt Disney Co., earned $22.7 million internationally and had a production budget of approximately $60 million.

“The Equalizer 3,” featuring Denzel Washington, slid to the third position, accumulating $7.2 million. Over a three-week period, the film’s domestic total reached $73.7 million, with a worldwide tally of $132.4 million. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” claimed the fourth spot, with $4.7 million during its second weekend, pushing its domestic total to $18.5 million.

This weekend proved to be one of the most subdued for the film industry this year. Hollywood is currently in a lull as it awaits the release of major autumn titles, following recent promotions at Venice, Telluride, and Toronto film festivals. Some anticipated films, such as “Dune: Part Two,” have been delayed until next year due to labor strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the WGA.

Meanwhile, Sony’s “Dumb Money” decided on a platform release, opening in just eight theaters this weekend before a broader release on September 29. The film, a dramatization of the GameStop stock saga, reported earnings of $217,000, averaging about $27,000 per venue.

Also maintaining its position in the marketplace is “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig. For the ninth consecutive weekend, it ranked among the top five films, adding another $4 million to its domestic sum of $625 million and a global total of $1.42 billion. “Oppenheimer” has achieved $912.7 million in earnings, surpassing “Bohemian Rhapsody” to become the highest-grossing biopic to date.

According to Comscore, the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday in U.S. and Canadian theaters are as follows. The final domestic figures will be released on Monday.

  1. “The Nun 2,” $14.7 million
  2. “A Haunting in Venice,” $14.5 million
  3. “The Equalizer 3,” $7.2 million
  4. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” $4.7 million
  5. “Barbie,” $4 million
  6. “Jawan,” $2.5 million
  7. “Blue Beetle,” $2.5 million
  8. “Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story,” $2.4 million
  9. “Oppenheimer,” $2.1 million
  10. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” $2 million

Seems like Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is still a thing. who would’ve thought, a Barbie movie killing it in the box office?

Oppenheimer surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody is kinda unexpected. Biopics are making serious money now, huh?

A haunting in Venice had so much hype, but the numbers don’t lie. Maybe the era of detective flicks is coming to a close?

Interesting to see how the strikes are actually affecting movie releases. Like, Dune Part Two getting postponed? That’s a big deal.

Equalizer 3 holding strong but definitely not Denzel’s best. Though I’d watch anything with him in it.
