Giulia Cecchettin, aged 22, vanished after meeting Turetta for a meal at a shopping mall near Venice, just days before she was scheduled to receive her degree in biomedical engineering. This case has deeply impacted Italy, and the discovery of her body on November 18th, concealed by black plastic bags near a lake in the foothills of the Alps, led to the arrest of Turetta the following day in Germany.

The killing of Cecchettin has sparked an unparalleled wave of sorrow and outrage in the nation, with many women highlighting the persistence of patriarchal attitudes. According to data from the Italian Interior ministry, 106 women have lost their lives in Italy this year, with 55 of them allegedly victimized by a current or former partner.

Italy’s state TV channel RAI has reported a significant increase in calls to a national hotline for women concerned about their safety in the hands of men since Cecchettin’s body was found, rising from approximately 200 to 400 calls per day. This includes calls from parents worried about the safety of their daughters.

Giulia Cecchettin will be commemorated during two significant rallies held on Saturday, one in Rome and the other in Messina.
