LSU’s amazing win on Sunday against Iowa in the national championship game was an incredible success. It was so popular that it became the most watched NCAA women’s basketball game ever, with almost 10 million people tuning in to watch it. That total number is over 100% more viewers than last year! At one point during the game, over 12 million people were watching it together.

LSU’s first victory in the women’s basketball tournament was the first championship to be aired on TV since 1995 when UConn beat Tennessee. That game was watched by 7.4 million people on CBS.

The following year, ESPN got rights to the whole tournament and network viewership reached a new high in 2002 with UConn’s win over Oklahoma.

People are watching March Madness a lot more than ever this year! The NCAA is figuring out if it should keep all the women’s games together, or separate them from the other Sports Championships that include 24 sports. A decision about this will come sometime in fall 2021 when the contract expires.
