Over the years, the program has evolved into a global platform. Giorgio Ghiotto, this year’s gold medalist for his film “Wings of Dust,” always aspired to create documentaries. However, growing up in Italy, he viewed it as an “impossible dream.” Like Spike Lee decades ago, he applied to the Student Academy Awards while studying at NYU.
