Newly appointed Speaker Mike Johnson informed GOP senators on Wednesday about an upcoming aid package for Ukraine, which will be closely tied to U.S. border security measures. This announcement will follow once the House finalizes the $14.5 billion aid intended for Israel, expected to pass this week.

Only a week into his position, Johnson made his way to the Capitol, addressing GOP senators privately about forthcoming plans. Furthermore, Johnson mentioned a provisional bill the House aims to enact, ensuring government funding into the upcoming year. This move is designed to circumvent a potential federal shutdown slated for Nov. 17 due to the expiration of current funding.

Commenting on the Israel aid during a Capitol Fox News segment, Johnson assured, “It will be accomplished.”

The initial reception for Johnson at the luncheon, intended as an introductory session for the recently appointed GOP speaker, was positive. Many senators were unfamiliar with him until he surprisingly succeeded Kevin McCarthy.

This includes substantial reductions in the enhanced funds for the Internal Revenue Service, previously sanctioned by Biden and Democratic congress members to tackle tax evasion. According to the Congressional Budget Office, this approach might increase federal expenses by $12.5 billion due to diminished tax income.

This stance by Johnson creates a political divergence with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. McConnell aims for a consolidated approval for aid to Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan, and U.S. border security funding.

However, McConnell has clearly communicated that any aid package encompassing Ukraine funding must also include substantial U.S.-Mexico border security provisions.

Reiterating his stance from the previous week, Johnson, during the private luncheon, affirmed that the Congress remains committed to Ukraine while initially focusing on Israel aid.

Sen. Rick Scott of Florida observed Johnson’s emphasis on responsible government funding. “While we support Ukraine, it’s imperative to act judiciously and follow the correct protocol,” he remarked.

The session commenced with a prayer, customary for such gatherings, as Johnson, a dedicated conservative evangelical Christian, introduced himself.

Conservative senators expressed their approval of Johnson’s address.
