Should Trump Skip the GOP Presidential Debates?

Donald Trump is once again saying that he might not show up to a presidential debate.

The Republican ex-president has said that it’s too soon for him to participate in any debate happening in August. This is according to two people who know about his worries, but don’t want anyone else to know what they heard. He also has been talking more publicly this week and saying that he doesn’t need to compete with anyone since his support is so high.

Donald Trump said in a post on Tuesday that not everybody had his approval or the approval of the Trump Campaign before they talked about the Republican Debates.

The dispute is an example of the difficulties that could appear in the Republican National Committee’s effort to have a fair and three-way battle for its leader. This type of behavior is familiar from when Donald Trump was running before, as he usually refused to take part in debates and place all the attention on himself. This technique often pleased members of his party because they did not want their leader to participate in usual activities like debates.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) is going to continue with their plan for a debate that will be shown on Fox News. Fox News has had both good and bad times with President Donald Trump. In an interview on Wednesday, Ronna McDaniel, the chair of the RNC, was asked about what President Trump said about his worries over the debate and if she talked with him about it.

I chat with President Trump a lot. We have told all the people running for president what the schedule is and announced when the debates will be. Everyone will later come to a final decision, but I strongly believe he [President Trump] will make it eventually.

Trump has done some that is really unusual for a President. Like in 2016, he decided not to go to the last debate with the other Republican presidential candidates before the Iowa caucuses. And this year, Trump decided he would not participate in the second general election debate against Joe Biden because of covid-19 safety measures. He had recently been tested positive for covid-19.

Last time, Trump didn’t participate in debates that had negative media like angry anchors who hate him and his supporters. Instead, he had another event to draw away viewers from the debate. This week, he also wrote on social media why he doesn’t want to be insulted by attending the debate. He said it is because he is winning by a lot and has a hostile network with awful hosts asking questions.

Fox News was one of the TV networks that supported Donald Trump for a few years. However, in 2020 things changed. The network declared Joe Biden as the winner of the U.S election in Arizona – something which made Trump and his supporters angry. In 2022, Fox News started to limit their coverage of Trump and months later they decided against airing him when he announced he wanted to become President again. After this decision, Fox didn’t have any televsion interviews with Donald Trump from late September 2022 until March 2023 – something people called a “soft ban”.

Recently, some private conversations were revealed from a company that helps with election technology. These messages showed that the host Tucker Carlson was recently fired, and he said bad things about President Trump. Even though this happened, earlier this month President Trump did an interview with Tucker Carlson. This week President Trump said he was surprised to hear that Tucker had been let go.

Trump said in a radio interview that many people ask him why he would even consider having a debate when polls show him with a lot of support over the other potential Republican candidate, Ron DeSantis from Florida. He clearly stated that it is not common to have debates when you already have such large lead.

President Trump has made complaints about the place where the second debate will take place. The second debate will be held in a special building called Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. This building has already hosted Republican presidential debates before, including one with Trump participating in 2015. However, President Trump is unhappy because Fred Ryan, the head of Washington Post newspaper publishing company, is Chairman of Board of Trustees at this library too.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) is looking at introducing new rules for debate participants. To join in, they will have to prove that lots of people donate and like them, as well as promise to support the chosen presidential nominee of the GOP.

Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson has expressed worries about having to make this pledge and has spoken with RNC about it.

The people who took part in the GOP debate have to sign a pledge, meaning they promise not to appear in any debates that are hosted by the Commission for Presidential Debates. This organization has been having presidential debates for over thirty years but Republicans feel like it is biased against them. Donald Trump believes that he still needs to do the general election debate despite this and said it is his obligation.
