Sam Kerr is set to get her Women’s World Cup campaign going for Australia after injury setback

Sam Kerr is ready to kick off her Women’s World Cup journey with Australia after recovering from an injury setback. Even though she was not required as Australia progressed to the knockout stages of the tournament, the Matildas’ influential captain is anticipated to take the field against Denmark in the round of 16 on Monday.

“I’m really thrilled. I will play,” Kerr revealed to Australia’s Nine TV network.

Kerr, the standout striker, has been out of action since she hurt her left calf just before co-host Australia’s inaugural game against Ireland on July 20.

Though she was fit enough to be on the bench during the match against Canada, coach Tony Gustavsson didn’t need to summon the Chelsea forward to salvage the game, as Australia defeated the Olympic champions 4-0, finishing at the top of Group B.

The decision regarding her presence in the starting lineup against Denmark remains uncertain. However, both Kerr and Gustavsson have been speaking as if her World Cup debut at Stadium Australia is imminent.

“We had a wonderful time as a team yesterday, witnessing her return with her boots on, interacting with the ball, and participating in team training,” Gustavsson stated on Sunday. “It was a joyful moment for her, her teammates, and myself.”

“She had a day off from feet training today. There is a specialized plan in place for her – I have complete faith in my medical team to get her ready in the best way possible,” he added.

Gustavsson also mentioned his focus on “how to maximize Sam Kerr’s impact” in the game.

Kerr, one of Australia’s most prominent sports figures, has been the icon of the country’s preparation for the World Cup, which Australia is co-hosting with New Zealand. Recognized as one of the world’s finest players, she contributed to Chelsea’s Women’s Super League and FA Cup double victory last season.

At 29, Kerr was tipped to be the top scorer in this tournament, but her participation was initially uncertain due to a calf injury during training.

Her impressive record includes four league titles with Chelsea, along with three FA Cups and two League Cups. She was also the key player in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium last season, a game that was witnessed by 77,390 spectators.
