This happened between Thursday and Friday mornings, causing damage to buildings, cutting off power and injuring people. The Ukrainian military reported 18 airstrikes, 5 missile strikes and 53 attacks from multiple rocket launchers. The Russian army is attacking a few cities and towns in Ukraine. These places are Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Marinka — all of which are located in Donetsk province. Recently, most news reports have been about 4 provinces in Ukraine that Russia took control of. Those provinces are Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. The leader of Russia, Vladimir Putin wants to make sure they have full control over these four places. Meanwhile, Ukraine is getting ready to try and get back more land. In 2014, the country of Russia stole the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine, which most countries said was wrong. The President of Ukraine (Volodymyr Zelenskyy) promised that he would get back all the territories taken by Russia. Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Oleksii Reznikov, spoke to the Cypriot state broadcaster about how the war might end. He said that Ukraine will only try to make peace with Russia after all their occupied territories have been freed. The President of Ukraine made it clear that he would talk to someone else besides President Putin in order that the two countries can live peacefully together. Mr. Reznikov said that Ukraine really needs to get some weapons, and the most important ones are air defense systems, bullets for guns, vehicles for soldiers, tanks and electronic gadgets like drones or something to stop drones from working. The Ukrainian military recently shot down a Russian Su-25 ground attack jet near Marinka. A video showed the plane falling to the ground and its pilot parachuting away. The Russian military did not admit to their plane being shot down. British soldiers reported that Russian troops have taken over the city of Bakhmut, and even reached its western bank of the Bakhmutka River. President Putin started a war in February 2022 and since then, this has been the most serious battle fought between Russia and Ukraine – it could also become really bloody. The Defense Ministry of the United Kingdom said that Russia had started progressing again after a period of slowing down. British Intelligence reckoned that Ukraine’s important way to get supplies to the western side of Bakhmut was in danger because Russia is using artillery really well and are receiving help from regular soldiers, which probably includes troops who can jump out of planes. Military officials in Great Britain recently reported that the regular Russian military and the Wagner Group, which is a private military company that sends fighters to different African countries, have stopped their fights with each other. The Wagner Group has accused the regular military of not giving them enough ammo and support. Yevgeny Prigozhin, who owns the Wagner Group, said that the people fighting in Bakhmut are not giving up. He wrote on Telegram that they did not run away but are instead defending themselves by blocking off roads and hiding behind tall buildings in the western part of the city. Russia launched a missile attack on the town of Sloviansk, which caused damage to customer’s homes and hurt one civilian in Bakhmut. The governor of Donetsk said that fifteen towns along the frontier were attacked with bombs. Unfortunately, the mayor of Donetsk reported that one person died and six people got injured due to shelling from Ukraine. Russia’s Defense Ministry said that they caused lots of injuries to Ukraine’s forces, and destroyed drones, weapons, and vehicles in some dangerous places near their border. Each side only reports their own successes, so it is difficult to know if their claims are true or not. Seven people were hurt in 24 hours in Kherson province located in Ukraine’s south. Oleksandr Prokudin, the region’s governor, shared this information on Telegram. He also said that Russian forces attacked Kherson 46 times and used heavy weapons like artillery and air strikes seven times. Yesterday, three people were injured in Stanislav village of Ukraine when they got hit by shells from Russia. The victims included a 10-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy and a 30-year-old woman. This nation was reported by Ukraine’s President Office head – Andriy Yermak. A member of the Russian army caused a 36-year old resident of Beryslav to die, and 7 times shells hit Kherson city damaging homes and energy facilities. Furthermore, Zmiyivka village faced a drone attack that injured 6 people. Nikopol and Marhanets in Dnipropetrovsk province were also struck by shells which caused damage to power lines that are located across the Dnieper River from the closed down Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. In the north, an area in Chernihiv region called Novhorod-Siverskyi didn’t have any electricity after some sort of explosions. Mortars (explosive devices) also damaged some buildings in the town of Vovchansk located near Russia. In another border village named Borysivka, a 39-year-old man was killed due to bombardment by Russia. President Zelenskyy recently visited a mosque in Kyiv to celebrate Iftar with Ukrainian Muslim soldiers. This is an important event for Crimean Tatars, who are a minority ethnic group from Crimea. President Zelenskyy talked about how Russia invaded Ukraine by taking over Crimea in 2014 and promised victory over evil and the liberation of Crimea without any other alternatives. Seventy years ago, the Soviet Union forced the Crimean Tatars to leave Crimea and move to Central Asia. In the 1980s, they started coming back home. Three reporters – Hanna Arhirova, Yuras Karmanau, and Menelaos Hadjicostis – gave information for this news report.
