Vivian Silver, a Canadian-born Israeli peace advocate, has been confirmed as a casualty in the October 7 Hamas incursion into southern Israel.

Having relocated to Israel in the 1970s, Silver made her home in Kibbutz Be’eri and was believed to be among the nearly 240 hostages held in Gaza for 38 days. The slow process of identifying severely burned remains led to the recent confirmation of her death to her family.

As a key figure in numerous Israeli-Palestinian peace organizations and a leading Israeli human rights group, Silver was known for her humanitarian work, including transporting Gaza cancer patients to Israeli hospitals for treatment.

Her son, Yonatan Zeigen, described her in an Israel Radio interview as both delicate and powerfully spirited, with deeply held convictions about life and the world. He recounted their text exchanges during the attack, noting a shift from lightheartedness to despair as Silver realized the gravity of the situation and militants invaded her home.

Zeigen reflected on the tragedy of his mother’s death, given her lifelong efforts to prevent such violence. The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 1,200 Israeli deaths due to Hamas attacks and more than 11,000 Palestinian casualties in the ongoing Gaza war, now in its 39th day.

In a 2017 interview, Silver emphasized the urgency of diplomatic solutions to prevent further wars. Her son now feels a sense of duty to continue her legacy, seeing it as a relay race where she has passed the baton to him. He expressed a commitment to advancing the cause she passionately worked for.
