This plan was decided more than 10 years ago. People from other countries paid close attention to this process. Lots of countries, like the USA, Japan, China, France and Britain, are trying to use nuclear energy instead of fossil fuels which can damage the environment. Germany has decided to stop using both but not everyone thinks this is a good idea. Some people have even asked for them to keep going with their plans. In Germany, major events like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima caused people to speak out against nuclear energy. This made the government decide to stop using this kind of technology that some argued was unsafe and bad for the environment. To commemorate this decision, environmental groups are throwing parties outside of certain power plants! Some special ceremonies are happening inside those same reactors too. Those who support nuclear energy state that fossil fuels should be replaced first in order to help stop climate change, since using nuclear power produces much less dangerous gases. Last year, a lot of people were worried when the costs for energy went up due to the war in Ukraine. Olaf Scholz, Germany’s Chancellor, had originally decided that all nuclear plants would be closed by December 2022. However, because of these worries , the deadline was changed and now it will happen on April 15th instead. The government knows that in the short future, Germany has to use more coal and gas, which are bad for the environment, to provide energy. Even though this is happening, the government is now trying to make sure there’s more energy from solar and wind power. By 2045, Germany wants to have no negative effect on the environment anymore.
