Poll Reveals Deep Divisions Among Americans Regarding Biden’s Alleged Involvement in Son’s Business Affairs

Approximately half of the American populace express little to no confidence in the Justice Department’s impartiality in its investigation concerning Hunter Biden. One-third of Americans express significant concerns about potential impropriety on the part of President Joe Biden related to his son’s business activities, according to a new survey. Notably, the opinions are highly polarized along political lines.

Within the Republican demographic, 66% are either very or extremely concerned about potential misconduct on the part of Joe Biden related to his son’s business activities. This sentiment is in stark contrast with that of Democrats, only 7% of whom share the same level of concern, according to data from The Big Big News-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Democrats, for the most part, are cautious about leveling any accusations at the President concerning his son’s business activities. Pilar DeAvila-Pinsley, a 60-year-old New York Democrat, stated, “In the event that Biden has committed an indiscretion, he should certainly be held to account. However, no conclusive evidence has been presented to this effect.”

The survey was carried out shortly before House Speaker Kevin McCarthy initiated an impeachment inquiry designed to link President Biden to his son’s business activities. This move is viewed as an attempt to divert focus from legal issues surrounding Donald Trump. A special counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland has charged Hunter Biden with illegal gun purchases, a development arising from his tax investigation. The inquiry persists after the collapse of a plea deal earlier this summer.

Federal prosecutors involved in the lengthy investigation have not implied any connection between Joe Biden and the charges against his son. Republicans have not yet produced substantial evidence implicating Joe Biden, who had regular conversations with his son while serving as Vice President and even attended a business dinner with his son’s colleagues. Despite these reassurances, public concern persists, partly due to inconsistencies in the White House’s statements regarding the President’s involvement in his son’s business.

Public perception of the Justice Department’s fairness in its investigation is also bleak. A mere 19% of Americans are very or extremely confident that the investigation is being conducted in a fair and impartial manner. An additional 30% are somewhat confident, while 50% lack confidence. This skepticism is particularly prevalent among Republicans, 79% of whom have little or no faith in the investigation’s impartiality. Even among Democrats, confidence levels are moderate at best.

The survey also indicates that public opinion is shaped by broader political divisions. An August AP-NORC poll revealed similar partisan divides concerning the Justice Department’s indictment of Donald Trump over allegations that he illegally sought to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The survey was conducted from September 7-11, 2023, and involved 1,146 adults. The sample was drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of error for the study is plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
