In an official statement, Barack and Michelle Obama remembered Campbell as a cherished member of their family.

The Obamas said, “Upon our initial meeting, Tafari was a skillful sous chef at the White House, brimming with creativity and enthusiasm for food and its unique capacity to unite people.” The couple continued, “Over the following years, we came to know him as a warm, fun-loving, and exceptionally kind individual who added a spark of joy to all of our lives.”

“That’s why, as we prepared to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to remain with us, and he graciously accepted. He’s been an integral part of our lives since then, and his absence has deeply saddened us.”

Search efforts for the missing paddleboarder began on Sunday following reports from another paddleboarder that he was seen struggling in the water before disappearing beneath the surface.

Although the search operation was suspended late on Sunday, state police announced on Monday that a sonar scan from a boat had located a body roughly 100 feet (30 meters) from the shore at a depth of approximately 8 feet (2.4 meters). Campbell was not wearing a life jacket at the time, according to the police.

The Obamas further shared that Campbell is survived by his wife and their twin sons.

this really touched me. It shows that we’re all human at the end of the day. A president’s personal chef, with a wife and kids, gone too soon. It’s heartbreaking!
