Nokia, a leading provider of 5G technology and network infrastructure, has recently signed a new long-term patent license agreement with Apple. This agreement serves as a replacement for their current deal, which is scheduled to conclude by the end of 2023.

Under the terms of this confidential agreement, Apple gains continued access to Nokia’s technological innovations for integration into its products. The agreement specifically covers Nokia’s advancements in 5G technology and other related technologies. Financial details of the deal, announced on Friday, have not been disclosed.

Commencing in January 2024, Nokia anticipates recognizing revenue associated with this agreement. The company emphasizes that this deal aligns with its long-term strategic outlook, as communicated in the first quarter.

Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, stated, “The agreement underscores the robustness of Nokia’s patent portfolio, our extensive investments in research and development over the years, and our significant contributions to cellular standards and other technologies.”

The initial license agreement between Apple and Nokia was announced in May 2017.

Nokia’s patent portfolio, founded on over €140 billion ($153 billion) invested in R&D since 2000, comprises approximately 20,000 patent families. Notably, over 5,500 patent families are essential to 5G technology.

Headquartered in Espoo, Finland, Nokia stands as one of the primary suppliers of 5G technology worldwide. It shares this distinction with Ericsson of Sweden, Huawei of China, and Samsung of South Korea.
