Neymar, the esteemed footballer from Brazil, has been levied a hefty fine exceeding $3.3 million for infringing local environmental regulations while refurbishing his estate in Mangaratiba, a city just outside Rio de Janeiro.

The municipal authorities of Mangaratiba confirmed on Monday evening that they had imposed four penalties summing up to approximately 16 million Brazilian reals. This was the result of Neymar allegedly erecting an illicit artificial lake at his luxurious residence.

The official statement outlined numerous violations observed at Neymar’s property. These included the commencement of unauthorized constructions demanding environmental oversight, unauthorized alteration and diversion of a river path, moving of rocks and sand, unauthorized removal of vegetation, and ignoring a prohibition order.

As per a document from the city hall accessed by The Big Big News, Neymar’s decision to take a swim in the contentious artificial lake, despite explicit warnings by the local authorities about potential environmental damage, was a significant contributing factor to the subsequent fine. The document noted: “This led to another fine on the athlete.”

According to the document, “The footballer, despite being informed of the restriction order from the local environment secretariat and police who visited his property a day before, defied the order on Friday and entered the lake.”

Local media reported that Neymar hosted a celebration last Friday to mark the completion of the artificial lake.

A representative for Neymar, who is now 31 and plays for Paris Saint-Germain, declined to comment on the situation following an inquiry from AP. Neymar has the option to challenge the verdict, which may then be forwarded to the police for potential legal proceedings.

Genesis Ecossistemas, the firm responsible for the construction of the artificial lake, applauded the completion of the ten-day project on its social media platforms. The company disclosed that the lake spans an area of 1,000 square meters (or 10,764 square feet).

The comprehensive 46-page report from the city hall discloses that Neymar was imposed the maximum fine for each violation. The report, signed off by the city’s attorney-general, also accuses Neymar’s father, Neymar da Silva Santos, of verbally assaulting local officials when they arrived at the property to cease construction work.

The local government of Mangaratiba revealed that the unauthorized construction activities cost Neymar approximately 120,000 Brazilian reals (equivalent to $25,000).
