Chicago BullsDallas MavericksNBANBA basketballSports NBA Investigates Dallas Mavericks’ Move to Sit Players by Madison Thomas April 9, 2023 written by Madison Thomas April 9, 2023 0 comments Bookmark 69 The NBA is trying to figure out why the Dallas Mavericks didn’t use some of their better players during one of their last games, even though they still had a chance of getting into the playoffs. The NBA officials started a special investigation on Saturday to figure out why the Mavericks took Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic off the court during their game against the Bulls. The Mavericks had an 11-point lead, but they ended up losing the game, so they won’t be able to make it to playoffs this season. This could help Dallas to get a pick in the top 10 of the draft this summer. That’s really important because it will give them a chance – about 4.5% – to win the lottery and get the chance to choose Victor Wembanyama, who is from France, but is known all around the world for his amazing talent. Today, the NBA started looking into the facts and reasons behind Dallas Mavericks’ decisions in their game against Chicago Bulls. It is unclear what punishments could happen as a result but the Commissioner of the NBA (Adam Silver) has already said that they won’t accept any attempts to ‘tank’. The NBA teams are very excited because they could possibly get (Wembanyama) through the lottery system. Commissioner Silver said that every team should still try their best next season. Coach Kidd said that the decision of sitting players came from Mark Cuban and Nico Harrison, the owner and general manager of the Dallas team respectively. Dallas had five players out (Irving, Tim Hardaway Jr., Maxi Kleber, Josh Green and Christian Wood) for their important “win-or-else” game on Friday. This meant that Doncic could only play in the first quarter before he was taken out of the game. At that game, Dallas also gave away Slovenia themed scarves to the first 3,500 fans as a tribute to Doncic’s hometown. Doncic started playing this game less than a minute into the second quarter. The Dallas Mavericks announced five of their players – Kyrie Irving, Maxi Kleber, Tim Hardaway Jr., Christian Wood and Dorian Green – need extra rest due to injuries or soreness. However, all of them (plus Luka Doncic) were part of the team’s game against Sacramento on Wednesday. Coach Kidd said this was a decision agreed upon by the organization. After the game, Kidd said: “We may take a step back now, but hopefully it will help us move forward. Our bosses have made choices that we must follow and trust that Cuban and Nico will work hard together to bring our team to win a championship. We’re starting this process today.” It’s not the first time the Mavericks were criticized for trying to lose on purpose. In February 2018, the NBA gave a huge fine of $600,000 to Mark Cuban, owner of Dallas Mavericks, for talking about something called “tanking” on a podcast with Basketball Hall of Fame player Julius Erving. Adam Silver – the commissioner of the league – described these comments as negative and bad for the NBA. Furthermore, when Cuban made those statements the Mavericks were having a very bad season with 24 wins and 58 losses. Later, Cuban admitted to Big Big News that he deserved the fine for what he said. He told the AP that he was too excited talking to Dr. J and his excitement caused him to say something that shouldn’t have been said. Dallas hasn’t been in good shape for the West’s last play-off spot and even if they had won against the Bulls on Friday, it wouldn’t have been enough to guarantee themselves a place. They needed to win again on Sunday as well and then hope that Oklahoma City will lose their game against Memphis also on Sunday, only then can Dallas get the 10th spot. Also, even if all of this happens, Dallas still needs to win two more games away from home so that they can reach Round 1 series against Denver. It is important for the Dallas Mavericks to not make it into the Play-In Tournament this season. This would mean they would get one of the top ten picks in the draft, which they will be able to keep. But if they get lower than number eleven, that pick will go to the New York team as part of their trade with them during 2019 involving Kristaps Porzingis. Only a few days ago, the NBA said “no” to the Dallas Mavericks’ request to change the score of one game where they lost in a weird way. That was only adding more struggles to them as they already went from being almost champions at the end of February to having a lot less chances afterwards. This happened after their new recruit Irving joined Doncic’s team, forming a powerful backcourt duo. For the past 24 games, the Mavericks have only won 7. Only one more game is left against San Antonio, but it doesn’t really change anything.
