He feels it’s only right since more people have heard about the money Miami athletes make this way than athletes at any other school. The coach at a basketball game said that transparency amongst everyone is important and shouldn’t be hidden. He mentioned that you can go online and see the salaries of people in the NBA, but wondered why it is not public knowledge for other schools too. He suggested that there should not be any fear of sharing this kind of information. Larrañaga believes that it is important for college sports teams to tell everyone what they’re doing because the NCAA or even Congress may need to know if they decide to create rules about players making money off their popularity. Recently, popular Miami player Nijel Pack got a two-year contract worth $800,000. And ACC player of the year Isaiah Wong was given a $100,000 deal by the same booster. These are the biggest deals ever reported since college athletes have been allowed to make money. Twins Haley and Hanna Cavinder have made millions of dollars through their college women’s basketball career at Fresno State and now Miami. Coach Larrañaga believes that athletes should get a share of the money that is earned from television networks, shoe companies, universities, athletic directors, and coaches from college sports. He said he hopes young people can get great deals in order to start learning about money now. He also mentioned that a lot of NBA players have spent all their money and ended up bankrupt. But, he believes it is something you can learn from, especially because we all go to college for this purpose! Some people worry that when athletes make their salaries public, it would cause disagreement among them and create a negative atmosphere. But according to Larrañaga, this hasn’t changed anything. He said that coaches must still help athletes get along with each other even if they complain about playing time or not getting enough shots. Last year, there was a report that Wong did not agree with Pack’s deal and he wanted to switch teams if it wasn’t improved. But, Coach Larrañaga said these two players had a great relationship from the start because they both love playing basketball. Jordan Miller believes his coach hasn’t made any bad decisions and is also really happy for Pack’s deal. Larrañaga said that he doesn’t know whether one day universities will pay their athletes. The most important thing now is to have clear rules about NIL and to make sure the athletes get educated about money management. He said famous people like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and LeBron James earn a lot of money that these young kids might not get, which is why they need to know how to manage it.
