Marketa Vondrousova has created history by becoming the first unseeded female champion at Wimbledon, defeating Ons Jabeur.

A year ago, Vondrousova couldn’t play tennis due to a cast on her surgically mended left wrist and spent her time in London sightseeing and supporting a friend at the All England Club. Fast forward a year, and she is departing as a Grand Slam Champion.

In an enthralling final held on Saturday, Vondrousova made a strong comeback in each set to secure a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over the 2022 finalist, Jabeur. This victory was especially significant as Vondrousova was the first unseeded woman to reach the final at Wimbledon in the past 60 years. The previous unseeded finalist, Billie Jean King, who was runner-up in 1963, was present to witness the match and later embraced the triumphant Vondrousova.

Only 5% of women’s players at Wimbledon are coached by women, a ratio the tennis tour aims to improve. Educational programs are being offered for female coaches, and a mother-daughter duo from Ohio provides a unique example of female coaching at Wimbledon.

Vondrousova, a 24-year-old left-hander from the Czech Republic, has a significant career history including a runner-up position at the 2019 French Open and a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. “I didn’t think I could play at this level again. This victory on the grass court seemed the most impossible to me. Now, this has happened. It’s crazy,” she expressed.

Vondrousova overcame her initial rank of 99th and made her way up to 42nd by the time she arrived at Wimbledon.

For the final, the retractable roof of Centre Court remained closed, protecting the players from the outside wind, and Vondrousova utilized these conditions to her advantage. Accustomed to indoor courts in Prague, she believed this might assist her performance.

The match saw Jabeur, the 28-year-old Tunisian, succumb to a third defeat in major finals, despite being the only Arab and North African woman to make it this far in singles at any Grand Slam tournament.

Despite her record of just one victory in four previous Wimbledon appearances, Vondrousova displayed an outstanding performance, achieving a 7-0 run that included victories over five seeded opponents.

As the match came to an end, Vondrousova was overwhelmed with joy, tumbling onto the grass before making her way to the stands to share an emotional moment with her husband. Her plans post-victory include getting a tattoo, a pact she had made with her coach if she won the trophy.
