The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People’s Army (FARC-EP or FARC) was a guerrilla movement involved in the continuing Colombian armed conflict from 1964 to 2017. It was known for its use of guerrilla warfare and also participated in illegal activities including kidnapping, drug trafficking, and other forms of extortion to fund its activities.

Internationally, the FARC was designated as a terrorist organization by several countries and international organizations. Specifically, the United States, Canada, the European Union, and others classified the FARC as a terrorist group. This designation was due to their methods, which included bombings, assassinations, hijackings, and kidnappings.

However, in 2016, a peace agreement was reached between the FARC and the Colombian government, which led to the group’s disarmament and the transformation of the FARC into a legal political party, now known as the Common Alternative Revolutionary Force (also abbreviated as FARC). This change marked a significant shift in the group’s status and activities in Colombia. The new party retains the acronym of the former group as a signal of its historical roots but is no longer an armed movement. The peace deal aimed to end half a century of conflict but its implementation has faced various challenges, including ongoing violence from other armed groups that did not participate in the peace process.

Im not sure we can ever find a middle ground here, both sides have legitimate grievances and the international community has to step up, but how much can outside influence really change the core of the conflict? theres so much pain and history

i think the point about economic stability is key – without it how can there be any progress, it’s like building on shifting sand, youve got to have solid ground first, stability brings opportunity for dialogue and maybe peace

the role of the US is always going to be controversial isnt it? on one hand they’re needed for any real progress but on the other, their involvement can be seen as part of the problem, it’s a catch-22 and i dont envy the diplomats involved

it’s really a complex issue and the article does well to highlight the nuances, there’s a lot more to the Israel Palestine conflict than what meets the eye and its a situation where historical context is everything, peace efforts are important of course
