Leandro De Niro Rodriguez, who was the grandson of Robert De Niro, passed away at the age of 19.

The heartbreaking news was shared by his mother, Drena De Niro, through an Instagram post on Monday.

“I am at a loss for words on how to navigate life without you, but I will try to move forward and share the love and light that you brought into my life as your mother,” she wrote. “You were deeply cherished and loved, and I wish love alone could have saved you.”

Drena De Niro, who had Leandro with artist Carlos Mare, posted black squares on her Instagram accounts without any captions.

Robert De Niro, in a statement, expressed his deep distress over the loss of his beloved grandson Leo. He also thanked everyone for their condolences and requested privacy for their family to mourn their loss.

No further details about the circumstances were immediately available. However, later on Monday, Drena De Niro’s publicist released another statement on her behalf.

“We are devastated and shocked by the sudden passing of our beloved son Leo. We appreciate the overwhelming love and support we have received and ask for privacy as we navigate through this indescribable grief,” the statement read.

The New York City police responded to inquiries about a TMZ report stating that Leandro was found in a New York apartment. They confirmed that an 18-year-old male was discovered unconscious and unresponsive at a Wall Street address, which is the location of the Cipriani Club Residences. News outlets have reported that Leandro had recently turned 19.

The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner’s office.

Drena De Niro, 51, is the eldest of Robert De Niro’s seven children (the 79-year-old actor welcomed a baby earlier this year). She was adopted by De Niro when he married her mother, Diahnne Abbott, his first wife. Drena De Niro is also an actress, with notable roles in films such as “Joy,” “The Intern,” and “Mozart in the Jungle.”

Leandro had also pursued acting and had credits in three projects alongside his mother: “The Collection” in 2005, and “Cabaret Maxime” and “A Star Is Born” in 2018. In Bradley Cooper’s remake, they played mother and son, portraying the wife and child of Dave Chappelle’s character.
