It’s a Samurai story without heroes and shows how cruel humans can be with their greed, lies and betrayal. Kitano was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for his movie “Hana-Bi” back in 1997 and this time he made a different type of period piece, called “Kubi” which is all about traditional Japanese beheadings. Kitano said on Saturday that most samurai films portray famous people and don’t show how bad people can be when they hurt or kill regular people. The story is about a fight in the 16th century caused by Oda Nobunaga, who is popular in Japan but not famous all over the world. However, it’s similar to stories from Shakespeare. The fight scenes in the movie are very impressive, said Takeshi Natsuno from Kadokawa, the company that made it. 76-year old Beat Takeshi (real name Kitano) is a famous actor and comedian who used to perform on TV shows and movies before this one. He explained at a Tokyo event with his cast that although there’s lots of killing in this movie, there’s also plenty of silly moments. The new movie “Kubi” has a lot of famous actors such as Hidetoshi Nishijima who was last seen in the 2002 flick “Dolls”. Ryo Kase is also part of the cast and he had featured in the film “Outrage” before. Director Kitano wrote the screenplay for this movie which is based on a book that he published in 2019. He will also be appearing in it. The movie “Kubi” has some very impressive scenes, and they often only involve one shot or a very limited number of shots. Director Takeshi Kitano said that this was on purpose, and he learned that idea from movie director Nagisa Oshima who taught him to not use close-ups in important scenes. Kitano’s first big acting job was in Nagisa Oshima’s film “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence,” which starred David Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto and told the story about a Japanese POW camp during World War II.
