CrimeU.S. News Jury Selection Begins: Mother of Slain Kids Set to Stand Trial in Idaho by Joshua Brown April 3, 2023 written by Joshua Brown April 3, 2023 0 comments Bookmark 50 On Monday morning, a huge crowd has gathered at a court in Idaho. Lawyers are picking out 18 people to be jurors for the trial of a woman who is accused of planning something that had to do with the end of the world. Lori Vallow Daybell and her husband, Chad Daybell, have been charged by the prosecutors with a lot of serious things like conspiracy, murder and grand theft, because officers say that they were involved in two deaths: 7-year old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan. The couple has also been charged for something related to the death of Chad’s previous wife, Tammy Daybell. Both people on trial have said they didn’t do anything wrong, but only one of their trials starts on Monday. The cases are completely separate from each other and the second person’s trial won’t start for a few months. If this first person is found guilty, they could be put in prison for the rest of their life. A lot of people in the world paid attention to this story and followed it closely. It was a story that happened in a small village in Idaho where some kids’ bodies were found buried in Chad Daybell’s backyard. Because of this, the judge moved the trial very far away from the village to Boise which is over 200 miles away. Prosecutors believe that Chad and Lori Daybell planned to hurt their kids and Tammy Daybell so they could get money from the life insurance, as well as the children’s social security and survivor benefits. Police gathered info from family and friends that said the couple involved had a group where they prayed together, believing it would keep bad spirits away and help them get messages from the spiritual world. Vallow Daybell’s friend Melanie Gibb told officers that they both thought some people were like zombies when evil spirits took over them. The group prayed so that they could get rid of the zombies and they thought that if they were successful, the people who were taken over would die and their souls would be free from some kind of place called “limbo”. Vallow Daybell had said that JJ and Tylee were “zombies” multiple times before they sadly passed away. According to Gibb, this is what he told investigators. In late March, 1,800 people were asked to go to the courthouse. They got a 20-page form that was meant to identify anyone who might not be good at listening fairly to the case. Defense lawyers and prosecutors are looking over the forms now and they will start questioning potential jurors Monday, so they can pick 12 of them and 6 backups. This could take several days. Police in Idaho started looking into a couple in November 2019 after their family members were worried because they hadn’t seen the kids. The couple was not telling the truth when asked where their children were. Sadly, the kids’ bodies were eventually found buried on Chad Daybell’s property in an area outside of town. Two weeks after Chad Daybell’s former wife passed away suddenly, the couple got married. At first, people thought Tammy Daybell’s death was because of natural causes. But then, investigator became suspicious when they saw Chad getting remarried so quickly and decided to have her body exhumed. Vallow Daybell is in trouble because of her connections to the death of her previous husband, Charles Vallow. He was shot by her brother Alex Cox who said that it was an act of self-defense. The legal case related to this event happened in Arizona, but it has been put on hold while legal proceedings take place in Idaho.
