Ford Explorer Recall Investigation

A Ford Motor Co. recall of over 250,000 Explorer SUVs in the U.S is being scrutinized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The investigation was triggered by complaints regarding repair procedures meant to stop the SUVs from unexpected roll-aways, even when they are parked.

The issue was originally linked to a break in the rear axle mounting bolt which could cause the drive shaft to detach. Ford addressed the issue through a software update that activated the electronic parking brake if the drive shaft malfunctioned, according to the NHTSA. However, post-repair, two SUV owners reported erratic behavior from their vehicles.

One owner reported that their Explorer would abruptly halt, even when traveling at speeds between 30 and 40 miles per hour. The other complaint involved the vehicle jolting into motion while the driver was trying to release the electronic brake. No injuries were reported, but one incident led to the driver hitting a utility pole after the Explorer began rolling downhill post an abrupt halt, apparently due to the drivetrain disconnection.

The initial recall included specific 2020 to 2022 Explorers models equipped with 2.3-liter engines, as well as 3-liter and 3.3-liter hybrids, and the 3-liter ST. The recall also covered 2020 and 2021 Explorer Police hybrids and models with 3.3-liter gas engines. Both incidents that triggered the investigation involved 2021 Explorers.

Ford confirmed that they are cooperating with the NHTSA regarding this matter.

more reasons to go electric! Hybrids are a step in the right direction but we need full EVs. less parts = less problems.
