Interstate 95 is set to resume operation in less than two weeks following a tragic collapse in Philadelphia, effectively closing a heavily traversed segment of the primary north-south highway along the East Coast.

Construction workers have been tirelessly working to finalize a temporary six-lane roadway, which will facilitate traffic flow during the construction of a permanent bridge. Demonstrating remarkable efficiency, the diligent crews are on track to complete the project ahead of schedule. According to the governor’s office, the interstate is scheduled to reopen at noon.

The catastrophic collapse occurred in the early hours of June 11, when a gasoline-carrying tractor-trailer overturned on an off-ramp and ignited a fire. Tragically, the driver lost control on a curve and lost their life in the incident. Fortunately, there were no additional casualties or injuries.

The closure of this vital commercial artery resulted in severe traffic congestion in and around Philadelphia, potentially impacting the cost of consumer goods as truckers were compelled to take alternate routes. Promptly recognizing the economic and logistical ramifications, state and federal officials pledged to take swift action to mitigate these effects.

In an effort to expedite the reopening of Interstate 95, approximately 2,000 tons (1,814 metric tons) of lightweight glass nuggets were utilized to fill the underpass and raise it to surface level. Subsequently, three lanes of travel in each direction were paved over. While this serves as an interim solution, plans are underway for the construction of a permanent bridge.

President Joe Biden, accompanied by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, conducted an aerial tour of the site slightly over a week after the collapse. He commended the remarkably innovative design implemented to complete the work in record time.

Due to the threat of rain impeding progress, a truck-mounted jet dryer, typically employed to keep racetracks at Pocono Raceway dry, was deployed to maintain the necessary dry conditions for freshly laid asphalt, enabling the painting of road markings.

The round-the-clock construction efforts were even live-streamed, attracting thousands of viewers online.
