How Guy Ritchie Explores the Complexity of the Soldier/Interpreter Dynamic in War

In the movie “The Covenant” by Guy Ritchie, two people are disagreeing with each other. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a soldier named John Kinley who is in Afghanistan and he has assigned a man named Ahmed (played by Dar Salim). John tells Ahmed he’s there to translate but Ahmed insists that he is an interpreter instead.

The line is Gyllenhaal’s favorite and it really shows how close the two men have become. Despite their differences, they have formed a connection beyond just talking and now they would both risk their lives to protect each other out of respect.

Recently, Richie was talking with his actors on Big Big News with a line that he had written beforehand. Strange as it might seem, Richie actually co-authored this movie script because he got inspired by multiple documentaries which explored the link between military personnel and someone who interprets them.

This Friday, the movie will open and people are giving it very good reviews.

Ritchie said he was very touched by the connection between interpreters and those they worked with during times of war. Even though normally there is big cultural divide between them, the trauma of war brought their human spirit together in a really powerful way. He wanted to capture that spirit in his movie – how even when things are tough we can still be united.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Guy Ritchie have known each other for about 15 years. They first met at a Christmas party, where they both felt some sort of connection with one another. Although they spent all this time together, they had not yet found a project to work on until now. On set, the ideas are constantly changing, conversations go really deep and everyone is very creative!

Frazier, the director, told Gyllenhaal that he didn’t want any emotions between the two characters when filming. He wanted to have them have a sort of awkward connection with each other. Gyllenhaal liked this idea and put effort into coming up with ideas for how the characters could interact reluctantly – some of which were even included in the final version of the movie!

Gyllenhaal said that it’s like a table where you share ideas and make exchanges. Plus, at the same time you can enjoy meals such as mini-meals or large meals. It’s really fun, especially if you love food!

Salim, who was born in Iraq but grew up in Denmark, felt a bit scared when he got his first big Hollywood role. By the second week of filming, though, he had found his footing and even challenged Ritchie to a game of chess! No one can agree on whether Salim or Ritchie won that game.

According to Salim, being included in that circle of people was an amazing feeling because it created a welcoming energy.

Ritchie has had five movies come out since 2019 and two this year, which was caused by STX’s choice to switch their focus away from movie production. He’s become a good example for the film industry that is trying to bounce back from the pandemic and his newest $55 million war flick is another trial in a way. Even though it might be worrying for some, Ritchie isn’t worried one bit.

Ritchie said that everything in the movie industry moves fast so you have to focus on getting your job done, not how the movie is released. Even though it’s best to release a movie as gracefully as possible, some things aren’t in your control and this business has been changing since the beginning.

In the last 30 years of Jake Gyllenhaal’s acting career, he discovered that great stories don’t always have to be noticed right away – even though people are usually more focused on that. He called his movie “The Covenant” a classical story that has stood the test of time. It was even so powerful when he first watched it that it made him cry – which is something he doesn’t usually do with movies, and especially not with his own films.

“I found the movie really touching because it shows how people can be kind and helpful without needing to be over-the-top,” Gyllenhaal said. “It’s really a story about humanity and how good actions will always make a big difference.”

Ritchie had kept talking to his actors long after he was supposed to end the conversation, and his words seemed to remember when all of them were sitting together at the set in Spain where they discovered what the film was really about.

According to Ritchie, this idea is not just about being nice or kind. It’s really about connecting with something deeper and sacred than just the concepts of right or wrong.

The word covenant holds a special meaning for this story. It shows how there is hope for the human spirit despite good and bad times. Gyllenhaal joked that you could get an idea of what it’s like to work with Mr. Ritchie on a movie by listening to him talk.
