Honduras Cuts Ties with Taiwan, Recognizes China as its Diplomatic Ally

Honduras has decided to no longer be friends with Taiwan. They declared that they only recognize one China in the world. China’s TV channel reported this news on Twitter. This comes at a time when America and China are having a lot of tensions, especially about how China is being really strict with Taiwan. Now, only 13 countries still accept Taiwan.

The government of the Honduras country said that there is only one Chinese government and it’s the People’s Republic of China. Also, Taiwan is an important part of the Chinese territory and Honduras isn’t going to have any connection with Taiwan anymore.

Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said that their government is no longer related to Honduras anymore, in order to keep Taiwan’s sovereignty and respect. He mentioned that before the election of Honduran President Xiomara Castro, she had wanted a relationship with China.

Taiwan and Honduras used to have good relations at the beginning of Castro’s term, but then China tried to take away the connection between them. This makes Honduras the ninth country that Taiwan has lost to China since Tsai Ing-wen became President in 2016.

Since 1949, China and Taiwan have been fighting to see which country will be formally accepted by the rest of the world. China puts a lot of effort and money into promoting its one-China policy. They believe that Taiwan belongs to them and could potentially use force if necessary in order to gain control. Additionally, Beijing objects when other countries increase their relationships with Taiwan and will sometimes punish them for it.

Taiwan is still connected to four countries in total– three of them are in Latin America (Belize, Paraguay, and Guatemala) and one of them is Vatican City. In addition to these four countries, Taiwan also maintains informal ties with more than 100 other countries all over the world, specially with United States which does not have diplomatic relations with Taiwan but recognizes its importance as being a partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
