Harris to kick off 2024 with stops in Nevada, South Carolina, home to some of Democrats’ first votes

Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to commence her 2024 activities with visits to Nevada and South Carolina in the upcoming month. These two states hold significant importance in the Democratic presidential calendar, making them key destinations for Harris and President Joe Biden’s electoral strategy.

On January 3, Harris is set to meet with members of the influential Culinary Union, representing casino workers in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Culinary Union’s endorsement carries substantial weight in Nevada Democratic politics, and this engagement underscores the administration’s commitment to securing support in the state.

Three days later, on January 6, Harris will travel to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, which serves as the starting point for the Democratic primary. Here, she will address an annual women’s retreat organized by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest historically Black denomination in the United States. This outreach demonstrates the administration’s dedication to engaging diverse communities.

Harris has been actively touring the country to highlight the achievements of the administration, with recent efforts aimed at energizing younger voters through a multi-stop college tour. In the upcoming month, her focus will shift to a nationwide series of events aimed at rallying voters to support President Biden’s bid for a second term and to regain full control of Congress.

Both South Carolina and Nevada are pivotal early-voting states for Biden and Harris as they seek reelection in the upcoming year. Harris’s visit to South Carolina will mark her seventh as vice president, emphasizing the critical role of Black voters in the state’s Democratic politics. This shift in the 2024 voting calendar, with South Carolina’s primary leading on February 3, reflects its significance.

While New Hampshire traditionally held the first contest, it is still set to conduct its primary on January 23, with Biden opting not to participate or campaign there. The state faces potential penalties due to its decision.

Harris’s visit to Nevada will be her ninth since taking office. Nevada, with a substantial 29% Latino population, will hold its primary just three days after South Carolina, on February 6.

During her presidential campaign in 2019, Harris held a town hall meeting with rank-and-file members of the Culinary Union. While many 2020 Democratic candidates met privately with the union’s leaders, Harris secured a coveted invitation to address its members. Ultimately, the union did not endorse any candidate in the Democratic primary.

The Culinary Union, consisting of 60,000 members, primarily comprises women and immigrants. Key priorities for the union include immigration reform, healthcare, and workers’ rights. Last month, the union successfully resolved a lengthy labor dispute with casino giant Caesars Entertainment, avoiding a historic strike on the Strip. Harris’s visit aims to celebrate this victory with union members.
