She claimed the man who is now suing her ran into her from behind, causing her to feel scared and surprised. She told the court that it felt like someone pressed against her and made strange noises. When the accident happened, Paltrow was seriously confused at first. But then she realized it was not an intentional act of someone trying to hurt her. She remained composed in court for four days and made sure to deny any fault for the crash on the witness stand. Everyone in the Park City courtroom paid attention to her as she spoke for two hours. On Monday, a man named Terry Sanderson who was an optometrist before he retired will tell his side of what happened in the crash. He is going to be the first one to speak about it. In her much-awaited testimony, the founder-CEO of Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow, said that she was skiing with the plaintiff Michael Sanderson on a beginner run when they collided and both went flying. Afterward, Paltrow yelled at Sanderson without checking if he was alright. Apart from that, one of her family’s four ski instructors offered to give Sanderson her contact details and also file an incident report about it. Sanderson’s lawyers were saying that Paltrow was being careless, but she thought it was the 76-year-old man suing her who was hurt. Paltrow said, “When you’ve been in an accident, you don’t think about the person who caused it.” Sanderson’s lawyers were trying to show how wealthy Paltrow was by asking her about the cost of ski instructors at a fancy ski resort called Deer Valley Resort, and why she had left the mountain that day to get a massage. Sanderson and his legal team acted out the crash in the courtroom to make it easier for the jury to understand what happened. At first, Paltrow was asked to join in on it but her lawyers said no, so she had to stay on the witness stand and watch as one of the lawyers pretended to be Paltrow. Next week, Gwyneth Paltrow’s team may ask her to come back to court and also invite medical experts, skiing instructors, and her two kids Moses and Apple. The trial has been about things from skiing rules to the privilege that comes with being famous. The amount of money involved for each party is not much compared to the costs incurred from having a long lawsuit which involves plenty of private security guards and expert witnesses. This week in Utah, Gwyneth Paltrow’s lawyers asked for special rules. For example, people won’t be able to take pictures inside the courtroom or in the parking area outside. There is a rope there for Paltrow so she knows exactly where to enter and exit from. Also, unlike other trials, the witness list isn’t public. Gwyneth Paltrow’s lawyers are saying that it was not her fault for the crash and that Sanderson was exaggerating how hurt he was. They are also asking if Sanderson thought it was cool to crash into a celebrity like Gwyneth. His daughters said no, but his family is still being asked about what happened after the crash. After the crash, Sanderson emailed his daughters with a subject line that read “I’m famous … At what cost?” His eldest daughter Shae Herath replied asking if it was all filmed on a GoPro camera. On Friday, Shae tried to explain what happened as people were wondering if it was recorded through a helmet camera. This has made the jury in Park City and online viewers very interested about this case. On Friday, Herath said she didn’t know if any videos were taken of the collision. She was just repeating what her dad had told her on the phone, that probably someone skiing near them had the GoPro camera and captured footage of it. A GoPro is a kind of camera people usually bring to places like Deer Valley when they go skiing. While Sanderson’s lawyers have been talking about how their client’s health is getting worse, Paltrow’s lawyers have been trying to figure out what happened to the missing GoPro video footage. They still haven’t found any videos or used them as proof. GoPro cameras are often worn by people who do sports outside, like skiers, and record everything that happens. The court case has been investigating Mr. Sanderson’s health and behavior since he is 76 years old. The lawyers are trying to determine whether his poor health and losing friends are caused by the accident or just because he is getting older. Recently, Sanderson was denied $3.1 million in a lawsuit, so he wanna get around $300,000 for the damages he suffered. On the other hand, Paltrow has decided to counter-sue by asking for only $1 from him plus her attorney fees and one of her lawyers even showed the jury a real $1 bill as a symbol. Sanderson’s lawyers said that suing for $1 was like a game Taylor Swift played in 2017 to show how famous Paltrow is. When asked if they were friends, Paltrow said no but that she was friendly with the singer. Anna Furman from the Associated Press helped report about this.
