Get a Glimpse of Hollywood’s Star Studded Rehearsals at the Dolby Theatre

At the Academy Awards this year, some of your favourite characters will appear onstage right beside each other. Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell, who were in “Four Weddings and a Funeral” together, will present an award. Harrison Ford (the President from “Air Force One”) and Glenn Close (a Vice President) are also coming back-to-back. Lastly, Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors—who played enemies in “Creed III”—will appear on stage as well.

The Associated Press went to check out the practice for the Oscars on Saturday morning at the Dolby Theatre. There was a two-hour power cut in Hollywood, but luckily this did not have any effect inside the Dolby. It made nearby shops and restaurants close and also prevented people from using elevators at an hotel next door.

On Saturday morning, people who were part of the Academy Awards (aka Oscars) arrived at the theater as it was raining lightly outside. They went through some lines and practiced how they would formally give out awards. This happened several times leading up to the award show until they had a full practice that ran late into the night.

The theater was filled with people, from Janet Yang (who is the president of the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) all the way to the stagehands and camera operators who were practicing. Everyone there had a peaceful feeling mixed with excitement.

MacDowell felt nervous as he opened the envelope. He said to himself,”I hope I can say everything correctly. I wish it was Hugh that did this part instead of me.”

The awards are not real and the winners don’t really exist. Instead, actors who know their roles well are hired to pretend as if they were nominated for the awards and even deliver acceptance speeches on stage! Those people might be pretending to be directors, musicians or anyone else related to the show. They come prepared with some knowledge so they can quickly give out brief comments when needed.

The presenters had different ways to do their thing. Some were very specific, and others got creative. Jordan asked the show producer Glenn Weiss about the font size on the teleprompter. Mindy Kaling was rewriting her lines with John Cho while they spoke together.

Kaling said to him, “Sorry I was asking so many questions”. John replied back saying, “No, thank God you did!”.

Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield were laughing while they read their lines. Then, Garfield started to clear his throat but was stopped by Pugh. Halle Berry was practicing with a smaller woman pretending to be Jessica Chastain, and Kate Hudson made an exciting entrance with her arms opened as if she owned the place.

In 24 hours, these people will all be dressed in fancy clothes, but for now, the men are wearing casual outfits like black sweat suits and blazers. For the women, they have their show heels with jeans or regular clothes. This is because the cameras need to know if the stars will look taller on the stage when millions of people watch them. It’s a long walk across the well-known stage!

Most things that happen in the theater, like what it looks like and who is giving away awards, are kept secret. This means that some of the show’s surprises aren’t spoiled and you get to enjoy them when it airs on ABC this Sunday at 8pm Eastern time.
