Georgia has ascended to the pinnacle of the College Football Playoff rankings, surpassing Ohio State to claim the top spot. The rankings, updated on Tuesday evening, also saw Michigan and Florida State maintain their positions in the top four, ranking third and fourth respectively.

As two-time reigning national champions, Georgia’s ascent was fueled by an outstanding 52-17 victory over Mississippi on Saturday, marking their second consecutive win against a ranked team following their triumph over Missouri.

Boo Corrigan, the selection committee chair and North Carolina State’s athletic director, highlighted that Missouri’s significant victory over Tennessee last week played a key role in reinforcing Georgia’s claim to the number one position. Corrigan noted that the decision to rank Georgia over Ohio State involved intense deliberation among the committee members.

Michigan, also enjoying a recent win over a ranked team, emerged victorious against Penn State with a 24-15 scoreline. Despite this, they remained behind their Big Ten counterpart, Ohio State. Their highly anticipated clash with the Buckeyes is set for November 25 at home.

The latest rankings saw stability among the top eight teams, all of whom won their last games. The only changes within this group were observed at the very top.

In the latest standings, Washington remained fifth with a perfect 10-0 record, followed by Oregon (9-1), Texas (9-1), and Alabama (9-1). Missouri, now 8-2, and Louisville, with a 9-1 record, entered the top 10 this week.

Referring to Cincinnati’s 2021 performance as a benchmark, it appears that nine teams are currently in contention for the playoffs: the top eight plus Louisville.

There are three more rankings to be released, including the final one on December 3, which will determine the four teams for the playoff. This is particularly significant as the event is set to expand to a 12-team format next year.
