Spears-Wembanyama Incident

No legal charges are forthcoming after a brief investigation into a dispute involving renowned pop artist Britney Spears, Victor Wembanyama, the newcomer to San Antonio Spurs, and one of his security team. The Las Vegas police announced on Friday that Spears accidentally “struck herself in the face.”

Spears claimed a security officer hit her as she tried to approach Wembanyama at a restaurant within a Las Vegas casino complex on Wednesday night. Wembanyama reported that someone, later identified as Spears, had grabbed him unexpectedly from behind.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Spears actually hit herself when someone moved her hand away as she attempted to touch Wembanyama, the number one draft pick.

Following the investigation that has now concluded, the police affirmed that the security guard did not intentionally or unlawfully exert force or violence towards Spears. The incident did not lead to any arrests or citations, according to the report.

The report stated that surveillance footage of the event “showed Britney attempting to touch the Spurs player on the shoulder. When she made contact, someone (name redacted) moved her hand away from the player without looking, causing Britney’s hand to strike her own face.”

After the incident outside the restaurant, Spears filed a police report accusing battery. She posted an Instagram reaction on Friday, saying, “Either way I’m still a huge fan of the NBA player … it’s not his fault his security hit me.”

Wembanyama was due to make his NBA Summer League debut with the Spurs in Las Vegas on Friday night. The 7’3″ French teenager, last month’s number one NBA draft pick, joins the league amid as much fanfare as LeBron James in 2003.

The confrontation took place on Wednesday night. Spears said she recognized Wembanyama from another hotel earlier in the evening and upon spotting him again at a restaurant in the Aria Resort & Casino, she “decided to congratulate him on his success.”

On Thursday, Spears said, “His security then slapped me in the face without looking back, nearly knocking me down and causing my glasses to fall off.”

Security guards for both the Spurs and Spears, who agree that pushing a hand off someone’s shoulder is standard procedure, were interviewed by the police. Spears’ security team reported that she also apologized after the Spurs’ security guard spoke with her and apologized, as mentioned in the police report.

Spears’ Los Angeles lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, was yet to respond to calls and emails about the police report on Friday.

Spears referred to the incident as “super embarrassing” in posts on Twitter and Instagram on Thursday. She refuted the idea of grabbing Wembanyama, stating she simply “tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.” She also expressed hope for an apology from the team or the involved security guard.

Wembanyama gave a differing account. He stated that he was advised not to stop for anyone as he entered the restaurant to prevent causing a commotion. A person was heard yelling “sir, sir” at him, and that individual “grabbed me from behind,” he explained.

It was several hours later that he discovered the individual was Spears. He said he never saw her because he never turned around.
