Spears-Wembanyama Incident

After conducting a brief investigation into a scuffle involving the pop star Britney Spears, the San Antonio Spurs’ newcomer Victor Wembanyama, and a member of the player’s security detail, Las Vegas police decided not to press charges. The decision was made upon concluding that Spears accidentally “hit herself in the face.”

Spears initially reported being hit by a security guard as she attempted to approach Wembanyama near a restaurant in a Las Vegas casino complex on Wednesday night. Wembanyama stated that an individual, who he later discovered was Spears, grabbed him from behind.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department clarified that Spears accidentally hit herself when someone removed her hand from Wembanyama as she was attempting to tap the first overall pick.

Upon concluding their investigation, the police determined that the security guard did not intentionally or illegally use force or violence against Spears. There were no arrests or citations related to the incident, according to the report.

The police reported that the event’s surveillance footage “depicted Britney attempting to tap the Spurs player on the shoulder. As she touched the player, (redacted) removed her hand from the player without looking, causing Britney’s hand to strike her own face.”

After the incident outside the restaurant, Spears filed a police report alleging battery. On Friday, she shared her feelings on Instagram, commenting, “Regardless, I remain a big fan of the NBA player… it’s not his fault his security hit me.”

Wembanyama was debuting in the NBA Summer League for the Spurs in Las Vegas on Friday night. The 7-foot-3 French teenager, the first overall pick in the previous month’s NBA draft, is entering the league with as much anticipation as anyone since LeBron James in 2003.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night; Spears identified Wembanyama at a different hotel earlier that evening. Upon spotting him again entering a restaurant at the Aria Resort & Casino, she decided to approach him to congratulate him on his recent success.

On Thursday, Spears stated, “His security backhanded me in the face without looking back, in front of a crowd. It nearly knocked me over and caused my glasses to fall off.”

According to the police report, both Spears’ and the Spurs’ security teams concurred that removing a hand from someone’s shoulder is a standard response. The Spurs’ security guard reportedly spoke with Spears afterwards, identifying himself and expressing regret. It was reported that Spears’ security team also apologized.

Spears’ Los Angeles-based lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, did not promptly respond to phone calls and emails on Friday regarding the police report.

On Thursday, Spears posted on Twitter and Instagram that the encounter was “extremely embarrassing.” She denied grabbing Wembanyama, stating that she merely “tapped him on the shoulder to attract his attention.” She expressed hope for an apology from the team or the involved security guard.

Wembanyama recounted the incident differently. He reported that his security team advised him not to pause for anyone while entering the restaurant, as this could attract a crowd. He remembered someone calling out to him and then being grabbed from behind.

Hours later, he was informed that the person was Spears. He claimed he never saw her, as he didn’t turn around.

Wembanyama’s gonna have quite a start to his NBA career. First overall pick and already making headlines, though not the way he probably wanted.
