Building collapsesEuropeFranceMarseille Fire Halts Rescue Efforts at Collapsed Building in Marseille, France by Madison Thomas April 9, 2023 written by Madison Thomas April 9, 2023 0 comments Bookmark 64 In Marseille, France, up to 10 people might be buried under the mess of a building that exploded and crashed down. Unfortunately, fire inside the debris stopped the rescue teams from searching for survivors. The French Interior Minister said four people lived there but it is unknown if they are alive or dead, or what caused the blast in the first place. Darmanin visited the site where a five-story building had collapsed 11 hours before. 100 firefighters, with help from experts, worked through the night to put out the fire which was burning underground under the mess caused by the collapse. The mission was not only to keep firefighters safe but also make sure no one else got hurt and that other buildings close by were protected. 30 buildings in the area had to be emptied and cleared out, according to Darmanin. The building that fell down is on a small street in downtown Marseille which has made it hard for firefighters and rescue workers to do their job. It was so hot in the area it wasn’t possible to send in help dogs. Robots were sent instead. Marseille’s Mayor Benoit Payan said two buildings nearby the one that had collapsed were partially destroyed before it completely caved in. Six people needed to be sent to the hospital after this happened. Lionel Mathieu, commander of the Marseille fire brigade, said they must try and put out the fire while also finding any potential victims buried under the rubble. Payan, the mayor said that firefighters are trying their best to put out the fire. Sadly, he warned that there might be victims due to this incident. He added that an explosion could possibly be what caused the building to collapse, but no conclusions can be made until more investigations are done.
