Exceptionally Preserved Bronze Age Sword Unearthed by German Archaeologists

German officials have announced the discovery of an astonishingly well-preserved bronze sword, crafted over 3,000 years ago, which retains its lustrous appearance to this day.

According to the Bavaria State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, the sword is estimated to originate from the late 14th century B.C., placing it squarely in the middle of the Bronze Age. Uncovered during recent excavations in Noerdlingen, a region situated between Nuremberg and Stuttgart in southern Germany, this remarkable find has captivated experts.

Featuring a bronze octagonal hilt, the sword was found within a grave that housed the remains of three individuals—a man, a woman, and a young boy—who were buried successively alongside various bronze artifacts. Although the precise familial connection between these individuals remains uncertain, the Bavarian office confirmed their simultaneous interment.

“Our archaeologists are currently conducting examinations on the sword and the burial site to obtain a more precise understanding of this discovery,” stated Mathias Pfeil, the head of the office. “Nevertheless, we can already affirm that the level of preservation is truly extraordinary. Such findings of this caliber are exceedingly rare.”

While swords from this period are not commonly found intact, occasional discoveries have arisen from burial mounds that were unearthed in the 19th century or as individual chance finds, as explained by the office.
