Evan Ferguson Secures First Career Hat Trick in Brighton’s 3-1 Victory Over Newcastle

Evan Ferguson, the 18-year-old striker from Ireland, achieved his inaugural career hat trick, leading Brighton to a 3-1 triumph against Newcastle. The win marked Newcastle’s third consecutive loss in the English Premier League and occurred on Saturday.

Ferguson’s second goal, an impressive long-range curler, followed a straightforward first-half finish. He rounded off his hat trick with a shot that took a significant deflection from Newcastle’s Fabian Schar.

This victory for Brighton comes on the heels of a significant week for the club. Just a day prior, Brighton was drawn into a group with Ajax, Marseille, and AEK Athens for its debut campaign in the Europa League. Additionally, the club executed a notable transfer on Friday by securing Ansu Fati on loan from Barcelona. The club has now won three out of its first four league games, recovering from a loss to West Ham the previous weekend.

Last season, Newcastle suffered only five league losses, but this recent defeat adds to a series of losses, including setbacks against Manchester City and Liverpool. The latter managed a dramatic comeback last weekend, despite playing with 10 men.

Newcastle, which was recently drawn into a Champions League group featuring AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund, initially appeared more assertive in the match. Striker Alexander Isak posed a threat on two occasions. However, Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope, made a crucial error in the 27th minute. His misguided clearance went directly to a Brighton player, and although he managed to save one shot from the counterattack that followed, he fumbled Billy Gilmour’s powerful long-range attempt. Ferguson capitalized on this, slotting home the rebound to open the scoring.

Ferguson extended Brighton’s lead in the 65th minute, making the most of the room he was given in Newcastle’s half. He curled a skillful shot into the bottom right corner of the net from a considerable distance. His third and final goal had a degree of fortune, as his shot deflected off Fabian Schar and sailed past the helpless Pope.
