Doubts Arise over Carlee Russell’s Kidnapping Claim as Police Investigate Toddler’s Presence on Alabama Highway

Authorities have raised skepticism regarding the abduction claim made by Carlee Russell, a 25-year-old woman from Alabama who vanished for two days after contacting emergency services about a toddler found wandering on a highway. Police stated on Wednesday that they have been unable to corroborate her account and have discovered evidence that casts doubt on her story.

Carlee Russell’s disappearance last Thursday triggered a frantic search by her family and friends. Her return home on Saturday sparked intense speculation about her whereabouts and the events that unfolded.

During an interview on NBC’s “Today” show, Carlee Russell’s mother, Talitha Russell, asserted that her daughter had been kidnapped and had fought for her life during her disappearance.

However, Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis expressed skepticism about this narrative during a press conference, stating that detectives are still investigating the situation but have been “unable to verify most of Carlee’s initial statement.”

According to Carlee Russell’s statement to detectives, she was seized by a man who emerged from the trees while she stopped to check on the child. She claimed that she was forced into a car and an 18-wheel truck, blindfolded, and taken to a residence where a woman offered her cheese crackers. At some point, Carlee Russell managed to escape from the vehicle and fled through the woods to her neighborhood.

Prior to her disappearance, she had used her cellphone to search for information about Amber Alerts, a movie about abduction titled “Taken,” and a one-way bus ticket from Birmingham, Alabama, to Nashville, Tennessee, scheduled for the day she went missing. Derzis revealed that her phone records also indicated that she had traveled approximately 600 yards while reporting to a 911 operator that she was following a 3- or 4-year-old child in a diaper along the highway. Carlee Russell has not provided a second statement to investigators.

“It is highly unusual that on the day someone claims to be kidnapped, they spend seven or eight hours searching the internet and Googling a movie about abduction, ‘Taken,'” remarked Derzis. “I find that very, very strange.”

According to the family, Carlee Russell is traumatized and not yet prepared to speak further with the authorities.

“As you can see, there are still many unanswered questions, and only Carlee can provide those answers,” Derzis stated, emphasizing their pursuit of the truth.

Talitha Russell mentioned on the “Today” show that her daughter returned in a distressed state and required medical attention. She indicated that Carlee Russell provided a statement to detectives in order to assist in the pursuit of her alleged abductor.

Police stated on Tuesday that there was no evidence of a toddler walking on the interstate. Surveillance footage from the Russells’ neighborhood revealed Carlee Russell walking alone along the sidewalk before reaching her home. When first responders arrived, she was conscious, speaking, and later discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment.

According to the police, Carlee Russell contacted a 911 operator on Thursday night and subsequently reached out to a relative, informing both parties that she had encountered a toddler in a diaper on the side of Interstate 459 and was stopping to check on the child. The 911 call was played during Wednesday’s news conference.

Upon arriving at the specified location, officers discovered Carlee Russell’s car, cellphone, and wig, but they could not locate her or the child in the vicinity.

Talitha Russell revealed last week to al.com that her daughter was returning home after work and had stopped to get food. Carlee Russell was on the phone with her brother’s girlfriend when they lost contact.

“My son’s girlfriend heard her asking the child, ‘Are you OK?’ She never heard the child respond, but then she heard our daughter scream,” Talitha Russell said. “After that, all you could hear on the phone was background noise from the interstate.”

The police have reported a single witness who potentially saw a gray vehicle and a man outside Carlee Russell’s car.

On Tuesday, the police also mentioned that Carlee Russell had made stops to purchase snacks on her way home, but none of the food was found in her car or in conjunction with her cellphone and wig.

Hoover is located approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Birmingham.
