For the first time in fifteen years, her victory means that liberals now have control of the Supreme Court. This election could affect whether abortion is banned or not. Dan Kelly, who was supported by anti-abortion groups had been running against Janet – but she won! In Wisconsin, there was a really important Supreme Court election that had the highest turnout ever. The victory shows how much abortion matters to people in Wisconsin. At her victory party, the other three liberal justices on the court joined Protasiewicz and all of them showed their happiness by raising their arms together. Protasiewicz tried to act like abortion was not a big issue in her win, even though she and people who support her including lots of organizations that are for abortion rights (like Planned Parenthood) talked about it a lot when they were trying to get voters. Protasiewicz told Big Big News that she won because she wanted to make sure our democracy is safe, and people of all backgrounds can get a fair chance in court. In other words, this victory was about making sure everyone is treated equally no matter what. The 4-3 liberal court is expected to decide a law case about abortion. The State banned abortions in 1849 and someone is now challenging it. Protasiewicz said she supports abortion rights but didn’t say how she will vote on this suit. She called Kelly an “extreme partisan” who wants to keep the ban in place. Protasiewicz’s win in the election will have big effects that will last for a long time. It means that Republican-made law changes and voting rules won’t happen, and liberals will be the ones leading up to presidential election 2024 and after. During the last six presidential elections in Wisconsin, four were very close and all decided by a really small margin. In 2020, Donald Trump tried to get his defeat reversed but unfortunately failed – his loss was only by 21,000 votes. Now both political parties are preparing for another close battle in 2024 because the current court (controlled by 4 conservative judges) almost took away Joe Biden’s win in the state too! Kelly used to be a judge and helped Republicans plan a stunt. The fantasy was to get some people who supported Trump even though he lost the election in 2020 to vote for him anyway. Before the voting took place, Mr Protasiewicz said Kelly was really dangerous to our democracy because of his role in this fake voter plan. Kelly has not agreed with abortion in the past. This can be seen through his 2012 blog post where he said even the Democratic Party and National Organization for Women (NOW) have made it normal to take away a person’s life. He had also taken part in legal work with Wisconsin Right to Life recently. The anti-abortion groups have chosen Kelly as their top pick while Protasiewicz is supported by the advocates of abortion rights. Kelly was a judge on the state Supreme Court. They were chosen by Governor Scott Walker (a Republican) in 2016. Kelly served for 4 years until 2020, when they were defeated. President Trump had endorsed Kelly that year, but he didn’t this time around. Instead, Hillary Clinton endorsed their opponent called Protasiewicz. Kelly said that his work with Republicans was not important for how he would act as a justice. He wanted the campaign to focus on Protasiewicz’s role as a judge, saying that she had been too lenient in criminal cases and claiming she was “bought” by Democrats. The Wisconsin Democratic Party gave over $8 million to Protasiewicz’s campaign, leading her to pledge not to make decisions about any case involving the Democratic Party. Protasiewicz promised that she won’t let her liberal supporters who gave lots of money for her election campaign affect the way she makes decisions at the court. She also said that in the near future many topics from her campaign will come before the court. When running for the post, she promised that all of her decisions would depend solely on the law. But after his election loss, Kelly claimed that Protasiewicz had relied on appeals to people’s emotions and spread false information without regard for judicial ethics or maintaining the court’s good name. The man said that Wisconsin needs a lot of luck. He also believed that their legislative maps have been manipulated and labelled them as unfair. Another person disagreed because they thought the man was judging too soon, particularly on matters like abortion which might come up in court. In 2022, the state Supreme Court chose to keep the Republican-drawn maps. It was well known that these maps were among the most complicated in the whole country, and this allowed Republicans to have a very strong grip on the government, even when Democrats won elections like Tony Evers as governor in 2018 and 2022 and Biden in 2020. A new justice is joining the court soon, named Protasiewicz. He will serve for 10 years starting from August replacing an outgoing Justice Pat Roggensack.
