Colorado GOP Elects Combative, Election-Denying Leader: What it Means for Voters

The Colorado Republican Party has just selected a very tough former state representative to be their leader on Saturday. This person said they would fight like a warrior. The action of selecting this conservative leader is happening in Colorado, a place that recently moved to the left politically; and it’s happening at the same time as other states are also choosing people with extreme beliefs for their top leaders.

Dave Williams, a former State Representative and an advocate of Donald Trump’s 2020 election win (which was incorrect), was chosen from a seven-person group by the executive committee of his party. His attempt to add “Let’s Go Brandon” to his name on last year’s primary ballot was unsuccessful.

Williams won more than half the vote on the third ballot. One of his competitors, Tina Peters from Mesa County Clerk endorsed him. Even though she did not win much of the votes, Peters has become well-known because she is facing seven criminal charges for reportedly manipulating voting machines in her county. She said she didn’t do it, but many people still believe in her claims about election fraud.

Dave Williams was a state representative from the conservative district in Colorado Springs. He tried to challenge Rep. Doug Lamborn during the Republican primary last year, but his name on the ballot got rejected by the Secretary of State’s office. The reason for that being it included a phrase making fun of President Joe Biden and the judge agreed he couldn’t have this as part of his name; “Dave ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ Williams”.

At a speech where 400 Republicans were present, Williams suggested that the party’s recent struggles in Colorado weren’t caused due to a lack of understanding between the party and people, but rather because it hadn’t fought hard enough. He argued that the Republican Party doesn’t have an image issue, instead blaming feckless leaders for its failure in winning elections. He believes we need a strong leader who can lead us into battle.

Recently, some people who don’t think that elections are important have gotten three different positions in the state party. Even though it’s been a tough election year for Republicans, they still haven’t won any major races since 2014 and there aren’t many Republicans in Colorado’s government compared to Democrats and people who are not affiliated with either party.

Most of the people who ran in an election wanted to discard a law that let people who aren’t members of their party vote in the primary. All but one, Kevin McCarney (a former Mesa County party chairman) had doubts about Joe Biden winning the 2020 Presidential Election.

Williams had a rival named Erik Aadland who was a combat vet and new to politics. Last year, he tried running for Congress in the Denver area but did not win. He has also questioned the 2020 election results, however he suggested talking about it in nicer terms and gave a speech on how ‘Love trumps hate’. While saying this, Erik also suggested how the party should move forward after Williams’ was chosen as an official pick.

Aadland said to a bunch of people that the radical left wants to tear down our country, and we have to work together in order to win elections.
