Carlee Russell is facing charges of falsely reporting to law enforcement and generating a false incident, both of which are misdemeanors punishable by a year’s incarceration, according to Nick Derzis, the Hoover Police Chief. On Friday, Russell surrendered herself to the authorities and was subsequently released on bond. Derzis stated, “Her actions that night triggered widespread fear and alarm among our city residents, and even nationwide, as anxieties heightened over a kidnapper at large, supposedly using a small child as a lure. Numerous local and federal law enforcement agencies launched extensive operations to not only bring Carlee back to her family but also to track down a kidnapper who, as it turns out, never existed. Many civilians also offered their services, spending valuable time and energy searching for a possible kidnapping victim who, in reality, was never at risk.” While expressing his frustration at the limited charges Russell faced, given the extent of public panic and disturbance she incited, Derzis pointed out that the current laws don’t provide for enhanced charges. Authorities in Alabama announced on Monday that a woman admitted to concocting a story of her own kidnapping after pretending to stop for a toddler walking along the highway. (July 24) After making a 911 call on July 13 to report a toddler supposedly wandering on a section of the interstate, 25-year-old Russell disappeared, only to return home two days later claiming she had been abducted and forced into a vehicle. Her disappearance quickly became a nationwide news sensation, with images of the missing woman widely disseminated on social media platforms. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, speaking at a press conference on Friday, said, “This is not a victimless crime. Significant resources and time were devoted as a result of this investigation.” Marshall’s office was chosen to lead the prosecution due to the high-profile nature of the case. Marshall stated his intention to “fully prosecute” Russell and to consider the police investigation’s findings in determining the potential for additional charges. Russell, through her legal representative, Emory Anthony, has already admitted to creating the narrative. In a police statement on Monday, Anthony stated that Russell was never kidnapped, didn’t witness a child on the roadside, remained within the city, and acted alone. He mentioned that Russell has expressed her apologies, and he appealed for prayers and forgiveness as she seeks to rectify her mistake and move ahead. Attempts to contact Anthony’s office on Friday went unanswered. Russell claimed to detectives that she was abducted by a man emerging from the trees when she stopped for the child. She was allegedly forced into a car and an 18-wheel truck, blindfolded, and held at a house where a woman gave her cheese crackers, according to the authorities’ account at a press conference last week. At some stage, Russell claimed, she was put back in a vehicle but managed to escape and fled through the woods to her neighbourhood. Derzis highlighted, “This narrative reopened painful memories for families who have genuinely experienced the trauma of kidnappings.” Police are still trying to establish Russell’s whereabouts during the 49 hours she was missing. They intend to consult with the attorney general’s office about recouping some of the funds expended on the investigation.
